Saban already screwed up I see
What is it with Alabama coaches anyways? First Mike Price and now Nick Saban screws up early in there Alabama tenure.

USCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) -- As an audiotape spread on the Internet, Alabama coach Nick Saban acknowledged Wednesday using a phrase considered derogatory to Cajuns but said he doesn't condone such language and merely was repeating something a friend told him.

Saban, a former LSU and Miami Dolphins coach, used an ethnic slur Jan. 3 while telling Florida reporters in Tuscaloosa an anecdote about an LSU fan's angry reaction to his hiring.

When asked about the LSU fans' reaction, Saban related a phone call from a friend on the LSU board of trustees, whom he did not name. In what seemed to be an attempt at humor, Saban told of the friend's encounter with an LSU fan, who speaks in a Cajun dialect.

"He was walking down the street yesterday before the Sugar Bowl," Saban said on the taped comments. "He calls me. There was a guy working in the ditch, one of those coonass guys that talk funny.

"I can't talk like them, but he can. Most people in Louisiana can."

Continuing to tell the story, Saban then quoted the worker's vulgar comment about Saban going to Alabama.

Saban, in a statement Wednesday, said the word "can be taken as derogatory by some people."

"Those comments need to be placed in the proper context, so as to understand the meaning of what was said," Saban said. "The words were used in paraphrasing a story told to me by a friend. I was simply using the same wording used by the person who told me the story.

"The term in question is not language that I use or condone, and I can understand how some would take offense. However, I think it must be noted that those comments were made 'off the record' and the words merely reflected an anecdote that was told to me using that language."

Warren Perrin, president of the Council for Development of French in Louisiana, said the term is "highly offensive."

"I routinely state that the use of that term is highly offensive to descendants of Acadians, who are commonly referred to as Cajuns," Perrin said.

Alabama spokeswoman Deborah Lane said the university had no comment beyond Saban's statement.

Can someone please explain the difference in coon (meaning black) and coonass (evidently a slur against Cajuns)? Thanks.
By the way, I'm shocked that a man with his class would make this comment.

You would think these coaches would watch what they say. Things get recorded and will surface sooner or later.

Coon-ass isn't really considersed offensive to them its how its used. Its kind of like "******" it can be used jokingly it can be used from one black to another or it can cause a fight if used wrong. I'm from the Mobile area about 180 miles from New Orleans a cajun in many cases accepts coon ass as a proud label much like in the south you'll see stickers on the back of trucks proclaming how proud a guy is to be a red neck. I think coon ass comes from the large amount of racoons in the bayou. Coon hunting Cat fishing Red fishing Mud Bug sucking are all part of the Cajun heritage. There all pretty cool to hang around with and you never have to worry about your back in a fight.

As far as Sabans comments I love it. A little smack talking will only add to the luster of the game. I wish Les Miles would fire back at him. Sabans recruiting the hell out of Louisiana he wants to have him a big pot of Cajun gumbo next year and I'm willing to bet he does it.

Had Saban been the coach of the Tigers the Cajuns would have laughed at the comment but now that hes not part of the group it becomes offensive.

Wouldn't "coonass" just translate to black ass? This is a harmless incident...the least of Saban's transgressions. All those people down there talk funny.

I am sure Tchocky that "us down here" would say you sound funny as well. What the hell does any of that matter? I am a "coonass" and I don't read more into it than it really is. A guy from the deep south. Not sure exactly what Saban said but he should be real careful talking about people down here. Hell, LSU made him!! Remember he called us!! We did not call him. If not for us he is another average coach at a school who may never play for a NC under his tenure. If not for LSU you think Miami come calling? NO. If not for LSU you think Alabama is whipped into a frenzy as they are now? NO. You can't possibly think Bama fans wanted him because of what he did at Miami do you? NO. He just needs to give credit where credit is due and thank Louisiana for making him what he is today. If not then say nothing at all....

Ohh Bama fans. This just in. There is a opening here for a Recreation Director in my town so don't sleep well tonight......

                  onlooker,

I agree with you 100%. Although in Saban's defense, (and it pains me mightly to come to his defense), you could hear him say on the recording that what was about to follow was "off the record" and that they (the reporters) wouldn't be allowed to use it.

But you're still correct. You'd think they'd learn...
