It's not really different than going for 2 when an extra point will tie it and no time on the clock.

If you think your have a better shot at making the one play than winning in overtime it makes sense.

In this case he has to plan on scoring another touchdown. Make the first 2 pc, win the game. Miss the first, still have a shot to tie it by making the second.

It was the correct move 100% and it had nothing to do with gambling, link provided by xKMCKx explains it perfectly. The only thing I would have added to that article is that the later in the game it is, the more the move makes sense.

More "conventional" coaches are just too braindead to understand basic analytics.
