i am NOT judging this one missing the FG. to me, that's meaningless in terms of strategy. a high variance, unforeseen negative event.

It's an all or nothing go for the tie in that spot, like you said, if you turn it over on downs you pin them deep and need a stop to get the ball back anyway.

was trying to decide if i agreed or not with announcer in terms of 3rd and 17 and picking up first down in two medium size bites....... not sure how exactly to do this but i think having plays where you try to get PI is a decent strategy. i.e. deliberately underthrow the ball and have the receiver fool DB with his actions (i.e. make the DB think he has to catch up to the player badly)
