Lay the points and take the Texas Longhorns against the Iowa Hawkeyes this Saturday at the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio.
I’m really surprised where all the love is coming from for this Iowa Hawkeyes club that limped into the second season and covered a whopping one game in 12 tries this season.
I know they were decimated with injuries and they played a role with their ineffectiveness, but you really have to wonder about their mindset coming into this game. Maybe they circle the wagons and continue to be a bowl game moneymaker, or maybe they crawl into a hole and hide until next fall once the going gets tough.
Either way, I like Texas better in just about every aspect of this matchup. Sure, QB Colt McCoy might not be 100%, but he’s got a tremendous ground game in back of him and a stout defense that should be able to pick him up if he throws an errant pass. Yeah, Texas might not be too enthused about where they’re playing or the clout that comes with the Alamo Bowl, but a win here would give them 10 on the year to extend their double digit win seasons six in a row.
The time off for both of these teams will have indeed cured many ailments, but I still like the Horns better on both sides of the ball and have no reservations laying this chalk at all. Iowa just doesn’t do anything well enough to worry me in this spot. Washington State and Michigan were a couple of really good football teams in ’03 & ’04, and they were good enough to give Texas problems. This year's version of Iowa would get blasted by those teams as well, so lay the points with confidence as the Horns put an exclamation point on ’06 and head into ’07 confident.
Play: Texas -8½
