USC AD Lynn Swan has decided to keep HC Clay Helton for another season. In other news that borders on the absurd, Illiniois decided to extend HC Lovie Smith's contract for 2 more years. This despite his 9-27 record in the past three seasons. USC either must produce in 2019 or BOTH Swan and Helton are gone.

would illinois really be better off firing lovie smith and starting a new 4 year cycle with another coach? personally i don't see it.
i wrote in another thread that if these programs want turnover partially to keep the alumni/fans happy, do it with cheap, energetic, enthusiastic younger coaches. say 2 year contracts. i actually think this is a model that works for almost everyone. i guess the downside is recruiting which argues for much more patience with alumni/fan base.Comment
