Aggies QB Nick Starkel May Be Out For Season
Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin said Monday on a radio program that quarterback Nick Starkel had surgery for a broken ankle and senior defensive back Donovan Wilson had foot surgery, per Brent Zwerneman of the Houston Chronicle. It’s unclear if either player will be able to return this season.

Starkel was removed from Sunday’s loss to UCLA in the third quarter after being taken down from behind. Freshman Kellen Mond replaced Starkel and the Bruins went on to mount a 34-point comeback to win the season opener at the Rose Bowl. Starkel redshirted last seasons a freshman while Trevor Knight worked as the team’s starter. Senior Jake Hubenak took over for Knight at times due to injury but he didn’t appear in Sunday’s loss.

Starkel completed 6 of 13 passes for 62 yards before sustaining the injury. The Aggies mounted their lead on the back of a huge performance from running back Trayveon Williams, who racked up 203 yards on 22 carries for two touchdowns. Keith Ford had three touchdowns on the ground and ran for 114 yards on 18 carries.

Mond completed just 3 of 17 passes for 27 yards as UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen threw four fourth-quarter touchdowns. He also had 15 rushes for 54 yards.

A true freshman from San Antonio, Texas, and out of IMG Academy, Mond was ranked as the No. 1 quarterback in his class from Florida by Scout. He was also ranked as the No. 2 dual-threat quarterback in his class by ESPN.

Mond set IMG Academy’s single-season records for passing and rushing touchdowns, passing for 20 touchdowns and rushing for 18 touchdowns.

Yeah, not sure why they hate Hubenak so much. Was easily their best option at the time IMO.

It is the coaching. Just terrible. This is why Texas A&M should be in the market for a new Head Coach right now.
