U$C/WMU spread - What am I missing?

The spread is about 26.5/27 depending on where you look. Why isn't the spread 35-40? This is a national contender, at home, vs a MAC school that is likely to be middle of the pack this year after losing their coach, starting QB (and presumed starter going into this year, Flacco's brother), and the FBS all-time career leader in receiving yards. OK, they return a few pieces of the offensive line and a damn good RB, but is that enough to keep pace with USC?

I'm thinking talent alone is a 21 point advantage for USC. Factor in being at home, the desire to live up to the national hype, and the chemistry (between players and between coaches and their players) and I'm thinking this is a 4-5 touchdown win. Perhaps a 42-7 or 56-10 type of game.

Convince me I'm wrong.

West Mich returns alot of pieces of a pretty good defense, and should be able to run the ball. I'm staying away but leaning towards WM.

last year's power ratings - for what it's worth - suggests that USC should be favoured by 8 or 9 points at home

power rating picks are ALL OVER WMU in this game..........

i'm posting this for info as i think the one big thing for this game is it's Sam Darnold's coming out party for the Heisman. and with the way USC attendance has fallen they need the marketing kick. so i think it'll be fast-paced game and festive atmosphere.

if i had to, i would take WMU here. but my mind is highly conflicted which almost always means NO PLAY to me.
