There's a good argument to be made that returning production is more important than returning starters. This list is pretty dated, but can be used to bump against Steele's rankings to find commonalities: https://www.sbnation.com/platform/am...egon-tcu-texas

i love returning starter stats but so many people are on them.

i think QB situation is so important....... so many transfer QB's now too... a couple of sites recently analyzed every single program as per QB situation. very insightful as per what teams may be starting freshmen. i will link them if i can find them.

my analysis and some other internet analysis showed that defensive backfield was key and to lesser extent TB/WR and returning number of tackles made... i think you could make a theoretical argument for any position returning starters being very important....... surprising that offensive line has never seemed to have much importance even though i'd say theoretically it's #1 after QB....

anyway, QB situation is so important....... and i do think there is now value in transfer analysis which i don't think phil steele has jumped all over yet. phil is i think by far #1 reason that returning starter analysis is so important.

another situation that takes tons of analysis is find programs that have to start sub-standard size players at DT/NT and/or linebackers. those teams can just get absolutely demolished (assuming they don't run some non-standard defense that utliizes smaller players)... hawaii a few years ago was good example. 260-270 lb players at DT.

Of course. But the sbnation is an easy quick reference.

Yes sir. This is one of my favorites right now: http://cfbanalytics.com/

Gonna need a few weeks before the matchup resource is meaningful, but there is some really good info there.

one of the things that some of phil steele's competitors really focus on is the starting QB situation.. i think it is so important. and now you have so many transfers. also there is such a huge difference between a program with a new starting QB who is a senior who's been in the program for 4 years vs. a true freshman who hasn't even started college let alone a college football game yet.
