Where there is only 4 teams getting in you can't just leave a good team out that wins the conference championship. That's not why they do it. They started doing it to get an edge over their ACC rivals: Clemson, GT, and FSU. After Florida, Georgia, and USC started scheduling a bye or FCS game the week before their season-ending rivalry games, the Alabama and Mississippi schools decided they'd do it too, although it doesn't make a difference if the opponent is doing the same thing.

You should always be a fan of your conference when OU isn't playing one of the in-conference opponents. Plenty of revenue sharing and recruiting advantages for conference teams when the conference wins. Look at Missouri.
