The inaugural Popeye's Bahama's Bowl could unfold in similar fashion
to yesterday's inaugural Boca Raton Bowl, why ? Once again the matchup
involves one of the most high-powered offenses in the FBS. They may say
defense wins championships, but these lower-level bowl games are not
championships. They are pairings of divisional representatives not unsimilar
to regular-season games, for all the hoopla. We saw what Marshall did to
NIU, and profited from it.
Although the line is still low this morning still at -4 (-185), partially due
to the fact that both these squads lumbered through records of 7-5 on the season,
one has to wonder why the Hilltoppers with their scoring potential are not a larger
favorite. WKY has the 3rd ranked pass offense in the FBS. Quarterback
Brandon Doughty topped the FBS with 4,344 yards and 44 TD's.
That's 6 more TD passes than Heisman Winner Marcus Mariota.
The Hilltoppers avg. 44 ppg, complimented in the running game (67th)
by Leon Allen, who ran 1,490 yds this season and scored 12 TD's.
Although we can certainly expect the Central Michigan Chippewas to "get theirs",
led by a productive running game (69th) ,and adequate pass attack (70th) vs.
the pedestrian Hilltopper defense (110th,111th), I wouldn't want to be taking
Central Michigan today with a mere four point handicap.
Even the weather in the Bahamas today is similar to yesterday's Boca Bowl,
even better, with a mostly sunny 75 degree forecast that is likely to favor
the Hilltoppers' high octane passing game.
