I am a Ohio State Homer but......
why are the Buckeyes getting so much love this year?

    pre-season ranked #2?

Is this just b/c the Big 10 sucks and we don't have to play anybody with a pulse again this year?

Or can they really be compared to teams like Alabama, LSU , South Carolina?

what is going to make the Buckeyes better this year than they were last year?

I mean i know we were undefeated last year but we didn't play anybody.

I think if you stacked up the 2013 Buckeyes against those SEC teams, you'd have some pretty competitive games. OSU would ultimately be worn down by the physicality of the Tide, but would have a good chance to beat SC or LSU. The preseason ranking of #2 makes a ton of sense considering their 12-0 season and soft schedule. The rankings are indicating chances of getting to the National Title game more than true power rankings.

For me, it starts at the top. Urban Meyer is a proven winner...period. Two undefeated seasons, two national championships and a record of success everywhere he's been. He is recruiting/bringing in speed and better athletes than OSU has enjoyed in some time. The offense should be potent (9 starters) with a possible Heisman candidate at quarterback. The defense may need some time to jell but four of the first five games are at home and should give Meyer time to make any adjustments needed. The "IF" for the Buckeyes to me is how the defense develops during the early part of the season...before the conference grind starts. Opening with Buffalo, San Diego State, California and Florida A&M provides that opportunity.

In the GOY lines, OSU is favored by 21 at Cal.

Cal is in rebuilding mode with a new coach, new quarterback, new running back, new receivers and only two starters on the offensive line returning. In all, the offense returns just 3 starters.

Cal was terrible on defense last year (93rd), will be terrible again this year especially with a head coach who cares little for the defensive side of the ball. (see Louisiana Tech the past two years...116th or worse both years)

Ohio State will beat them with ease.

Bear (love that name, Bear Bryant greatest coach in CFB history) You guys at Ohio State are in for some glory years while Urban is there. He understands the SEC...what it takes to win at the highest level. He is already bringing in speed guys and 'Big' toughness on the defensive line. What separates the SEC from others is the defensive front.

Fancy offensives are great...but...when is the last time and how many times have the glory boys won a national championship in the past ten years. Meyer knows the road to a national championship from his experiences at Florida. I'm an Alabama guy...but Meyer scares me if we ever face the Buckeyes....like this year!
