Well bowl season starts this Saturday with four games. I don’t like to do it this way, but I am going on vacation (10 year wedding anniversary) on the 27th and will not be back until January 4th, so I am playing and posting all my plays up until then. I have a ton to do with Christmas, my work, my anniversary and our trip from now until then, so my write-ups will not be as long winded as they usually are. It is going to seem like I am playing a ton of games since I am posting all at once, but when you consider there are 34 games, it is not too many. I will keep them in order of when they are played. Here we go. Before I start, let me say Bowl Season has become a joke with too many games and too many 6-6 teams playing. It really does not mean that much to make a bowl game anymore.
Saturday, December 20th
Colorado St +2 ½ vs Fresno State (regular play)………………A couple of average teams, but FSU has sucked against the spread this year, so I will go against them as a favorite and take my chances.
Memphis +12 ½ vs S Florida (best bet)…………..There was actually talk of S Florida running the table and being in the national championship picture at the start of the year. What a joke! The Big East is a bit of a joke itself. Memphis will easily score enough to cover this generous point spread vs a team who plays to the level of its competition.
BYU +3 vs Arizona (regular play)…………..I have just not been a big fan of Arizona this year for some reason. Pac Ten not much better than BYU’s conference this year and I think BYU is the better team, so I will grab the points.
Sunday, December 21st
S Mississippi +5 vs Troy (regular play)…………….Troy might be the better team, but I will take the points with the team from the better conference and take my chances.
Tuesday, December 23rd
TCU -2 ½ vs Boise St (regular play)…………….Just going against the undefeated team getting points in this one. If this were at Boise, it would be a different story…then again Boise would probably be favored by four or more.
Wednesday, December 24th
Hawaii +1 vs Notre Dame (regular play)…………Taking Hawaii because they are at home and Notre Dame and Charlie Weis gets on my nerves.
Saturday, December 27th
N Carolina pick vs West Virginia (regular play)…………WVU has been one of the most disappointing teams this year. They have really underachieved. They are the more talented team, but I will take my chances with an improved North Carolina team who is thrilled to be in this bowl played in their own state.
Miami-Florida +7 ½ vs California (strong play)……………Just not a big fan of the Pac Ten this year. Cal is over rated and like they have been every year and Miami has their program headed back in the right direction. I think Miami has a chance to win this game outright.
Monday, December 29th
NC State +9 vs Rutgers (regular play)…………This line has really climbed due to Rutgers great play at the end of the year. At first I like Rutgers, but I have changed my mind getting nine points. I think the long layoff will kill any momentum that the Rutgers offense had. I just don’t think they are that much better than NC State.
Northwestern +12 ½ vs Missouri (regular play)………………Northwestern can score some points and Missouri can give up some points. Sure there is a chance of a blowout, but I would think Missouri playing in this Bowl might be a bit of a letdown for them. This might be a 48-40 type of game.
Tuesday, December 30th
Nevada -1 ½ vs Maryland (regular play)…………….The lines makers know what they are doing and to make a small team like Nevada a favorite over an ACC team tells me who the winner is.
Oklahoma St -3 vs Oregon (strong play)………………Better team, better conference and only laying three points. Sign me up. Sometimes it is that simple.
Wednesday, December 31st
Pittsburgh +3 vs Oregon State (regular play)……………I will admit that I am playing with my heart here and take my panthers. Maybe coach Dave has turned the corner after years of suffering and everybody making fun of him, including me. This is his chance to prove to me and everybody else that Pitt did the right thing by not firing him years ago.
Minnesota +10 vs Kansas (regular play)……………No doubt that Kansas is the better team and they might destroy them, but I have a gut feeling these two will play a close game. Just a gut feeling one this one.
Georgia Tech -4 vs LSU (regular play)…………This is another one of those games where I am trusting the lines makers. Seems funny a team like Ga Tech is giving a big names LSU team points. LSU is way down this year and there is a reason they are favored.
Thursday, January 1st
S Carolina +3 ½ vs Iowa (strong play)……………Not a fan of the Big Ten and I think the SEC is by far the better conference, so I will gladly take the points from the better conference. All those SEC battles will pay dividends for the Gamecocks in this game as they win outright.
Penn State +9 vs USC (best bet)………..This is only my second best bet of the bowl season. There are not many people who think Penn State has a chance of winning this game. I am a Pitt fan and I actually hate Penn State, but I will tell you one thing…….when you give Joe Paterno time to prepare for a game, he usually comes out on top. I am not so sure USC is the team we are used to seeing since the Pac Ten overall is down this year. I would not be shocked at all to see Penn State win this game outright, but I love the points and will be thrilled to death with just a cover.
Virginia Tech +2 vs Cincinnati (best bet)…………..Now the best bets are coming in. Tech a proven team who has been there before, vs a Cincinnati team who does not belong in a major bowl game. Big East sucks, is way over rated and they might not win a bowl game this year. I only bet Pitt because I bet with my heart which I know you should not do. V Tech is simply the better team and will win this one surprisingly easy. This is a no brainier for me.
Michigan St +7 ½ vs Georgia (regular play)………….I am contradicting myself by taking State here seeing how I said Big Ten not that good and SEC is so much better, but Georgia is one of those teams who wins games they are not supposed to and loses games they are supposed to win. This is a game they should win, so they won’t.
Friday, January 2nd
Mississippi +5 ½ vs Texas Tech (regular play)………..Looks too easy to jump on Texas Tech laying less than a TD, so I will go the other way. Just a gut feeling here, nothing else. Ole Miss better than most people think.
Utah +10 ½ vs Alabama (regular play)…………..Not sure what frame of mind Bama will be in after leading the way the whole season only to no be playing in the big game. Utah must have done something right to go undefeated even though vs much inferior competition. Just cannot trust Bama in this spot even though the possibility of a blowout exists.
Saturday, January 3rd
Buffalo +4 ½ vs Connecticut (regular play)……………Turner Gill and Buffalo has been a great story this year, so I think I will just follow right along. U Conn is one of those teams who just wins ugly, so the 4 ½ could very well come into play.
Wow!! I played 22 games, but most of them are just for one unit. I actually only have three best bets and three strong plays out of those games. Hard to pass up some bowl action, but they are hard to cap in my opinion.
There are still three bowl games left. I will be back from vacation on Sunday, January 4th to add all this mess up and see how I did. Being on my 10 year anniversary trip, I probably won’t even give much thought to these games. Just place my bets and come home and see how much damage has occurred.
