Why do coaches become retarded at the end of games?
I just finished watching the Oregon State @ Arizona game and was wondering why do coaches play like pussys when they are winning and there are a few minutes left in the clock?

So Arizona is up by 1 with about 4 minutes left and OSU has all 3 timeouts left. Now on Arizona's previous drive they took about 5 minutes off the clock and drove like 80 yards getting about 5 first downs on the way to a touchdown, and they did it all with nice play-calling, mixing it up with passes and rushing the ball.

So what happens when they get the ball with 4 minutes left and up by 1? The coach goes retarded and starts calling nothing but runs. Now if there was less than 2 minutes left I understand that all you need is one first down and it's game over, but with 4 minutes on the clock you are going to need to put up a little drive to win the game, and you can't do that by rushing every single play, specially since they know you are rushing it so they are loading up on you. Arizona just doesn't have the kind of running game that will grind out 3 or 4 yards per rush even if they load up on you.

I'm not saying go crazy and throw it down the field, but a little screen pass wouldn't hurt God damn it! So what happens? Arizona gets one first down, OSU burns all time outs and gets it back with less than 2 minutes.

Here is where it gets even worse. Instead of bringing heat on OSU, they just ****ing sit back and watch them drive down the field. Looks like a preventive defense, but the only thing that shit prevents your from is winning. I am so sick of watching coaches do this over and over again. Can someone tell me if they agree with me or am I just pissed because of the money I lost on that game? I am usually very objective even if I have money involved in the game, when I pick the wrong side I admit it, but when shit like this happens it just pisses me off.

Before you come and tell me Arizona wouldn't have covered anyway I want you to know I had them on the ML as well as the spread.

Couldn't agree with you more, cheme82. I have been watching football for almost 30 years now, and it's mind boggling how EVERY coach employs the same stupid practices you just described. Thousands of wins have been snatched by the jaws of defeat by playing right into the opponents hands at the end of games. I have actually wished many times that MY team was actually the team behind in those situations. CRAZY.

That seems to be the accepted modus operandi. Don't do anything dumb or dangerous etc. Just like the "prevent defense". Since Arizona was Wayne Allen Root's free pick yesterday I went with OSU. Much more on the line for them than Arizona.

Letting the other team get the ball back and then not putting any pressure on their QB qualifies as "Dumb and Dangerous".
