    College Football 11-4-08 thru 11-8-08
    Tuesday Night Special:

    Miami-Ohio @ Buffalo -9

Expect Buffalo to be a very heavy public favorite in this contest. Normally we fade public perception but in this case that would be a bad idea. Buffalo simply beats the teams they are supposed to beat and plays the teams they are supposed to be beat by very tough. Miami-Ohio is one of the teams Buffalo is supposed to beat. Buffalo 41-27
    Saturdays Line-up:

    Arkansas @ South Carolina -10

I caution you this should be a small play if you choose to follow.
South Carolina has already qualified for a bowl game opportunity. More importantly they have a huge showdown next weekend against Florida in the Swamp. I don’t expect them to lose this game but I would not be surprised if they were slightly less than super focused. While Arkansas isn’t in the upper levels of the SEC they have gotten better the past couple of weeks and even when looking bad they did score some points. Look for them to score enough here to keep it under the number. South Carolina 27-23

    Penn State -7.5 @ Iowa

Penn State is getting very little respect. Partially because of the teams they have faced this season and mainly because of how Ohio State has been such a disappointment in the previous two National Title games. I think people are allowing the perception of the conference to overshadow the quality of this Penn State team. They are a solid complete team in every aspect of the game. If you watch the performance of the team and not solely focus on the quality of the opponent you will see that they execute extremely well. How well they would match up with the speed of an SEC team or the size of a Big 12 team doesn’t matter yet. What does matter is in a conference like the Big 10 they are hands down the elite this season. Expect to see a very focused Penn State team this Saturday come out and lay a beat down on Iowa. Penn State 45-3
    Alabama -3 @ LSU

Alabama is another team that everyone seems to doubt. Well it’s either doubt of fear, not sure which it is the most. I can understand the fear aspect because they are one solid complete team. Not flashy by any means. They don’t have a quarterback that can win it on his own. They don’t have a back that can carry the team on his back. They don’t have a receiver that is drawing national attention. They do have maybe the best offensive and defensive lines in the nation. They do have a solid team defense. They do have a quarterback with experience who doesn’t force the issue and get his team in trouble. They do have backs that run hard and hold on to the football. They are a complete team whose only weakness is in the special team’s area.
LSU is by no means a bottom feeder in the SEC. They aren’t the contenders of old either. While they aren’t as bad as the two bad beatings they took at Florida or against Georgia they are still not a superior team. I don’t expect this to be a blowout but should never really be in doubt either. Alabama 27-10

    Plays:

    Buffalo -9 ** (2-units)

    Arkansas +10* (1-unit)

    Penn State -7.5*** (3-units)

    Alabama -3**** (4-units)

      Wednesday Night Special:

Northern Illinois @ Ball State -9.5

I would have passed on this game but I read Dbldowns thread and it made me look into it myself. I have seen neither of these two teams play or even watched highlights so it is based solely on numbers and line movement.

As Dbldown mentioned Northern Illinois has played tough all season. Even in defeat they have put up a good fight. I like teams that can play good defense and as an added bonus control time of pocession. Northern has demonstrated both. While the potential remains that Ball State could blow this game out I'll run the risk and take the points tonight. Northern Illinois 24 Ball State 31

Would certainly appreciate feedback or comments good or bad about the selections.

I know there could be good debates on both Penn State and Alabama.

I'm on the other side of that Penn St. game. I've watched Iowa all year and they tend to play teams close. Also, I know you've heard of Shone Greene by now, but this kid is a beast. I really think he already has NFL talent. Iowa will look to control the clock and if they can get Greene going, Iowa will cover. Their QB is suspect at times since he's young, but he improves a little bit each game and when they have the running game going they pull off play-action pass as good as anyone in the Big 10. Offensive line is also very good and for a young, improving Iowa team that believes in their coach I would be worried, especially about that hook. GL to you though. Like Alabama but probably won't play it and SC is also a no play for me for the reason you listed as they may get caught looking ahead. Well...after looking closer at the Alabama game I think I might play it small.

Not yet the 4th quarter but this game is in the books. I got exactly what I deserved here. I posted a game based solely on what I saw in forums and stats from previous games. I almost always only play games on teams I have seen play.

Wal, looking at your Alabama pick I was wondering why you think Alabama will cover the three. Granted LSU got destroyed by Florida who is comparable to Alabama as far as talent is concerned, but LSU lost that game on the road, and because of Florida's speed. This game is at LSU and Alabama's speed does not even compare to the speed of Florida's. The whole Saban thing has to be worth something to someone not to mention...

Korbs, my reasons for the game really has nothing to do with LSU's games at Florida or against Georgia. Although you would have to admit there is something to be said about the Georgia loss because it was at home for LSU.

True Florida for certain and even perhaps Georgia have more speed that does Alabama. However neither of those teams have the offesive and deffensive line of Alabama. Very big and physical. I think this is the key element in this game because I feel it will be a power type game. Both teams want to run. Come late in the game Alabama's strength should take over.

Saban is certainly a deciding factor here as I have stated on more than one occassion that he might very well be the best coach in the college ranks.

I fully expect this to be a battle. The home field advantage for LSU is no myth but being that Saban coached there I think he has a good understanding on how to prep his team for that environment.

I don't want to try and convince you into taking Alabama in this game. It's just how I feel the game will go. Pound it out, ground it out, Miles to gamble on 4th down, a key turnover and the physical strength of Alabama to win this game by 7-10.

                    Thursday Night Play:

A different type of play for me tonight. I rarely do totals and have never bet a team total until now.

                    Maryland/V-Tech under 41.5*
                    TCU team total over 21.5*

                        9:00 PM

                        Nevada -1.5 @ Fresno State

I would have passed on this game if it hadn't been for the line movement research I was doing for this week. After seeing the line doing a 360 degree turn I went looking into the stats for the teams. I have watched Fresno on three occassions this season and in two of their contest they were less than impressive and practically awful. They did open the season with a win against Rutgers but that turned out to be not so difficult as Rutgers is having a down year.

Nevada and Fresno have two common opponents this season.

                        Utah State 17

                        Nevada 44

                        Fresno State 30

                        Utah State 28

                        Nevada 49

                        Idaho 14

                        Idaho 32

                        Fresno State 45

Nevada has played arguably two tougher out of conference games losing both but to Texas Tech and Missouri. Fresno State's out of conference toughest opponents were losing to Wisconsin and beating Rutgers.

Fresno State has several players injured last week that are doubtful or Questionable this week.

                        Wide Recievers Crawley and Moore

                        Running Backs Mathews and Miller

With What I have seen from Fresno State combined with the numbers and the added bonus of reverse line movement I'm making Nevada a play.

                        Nevada -1.5 *

Appreciate it Pags. Not real happy we are on opposite sides of this Penn State/Iowa game. Things are going against me since posting earlier in the week. Weather is a real factor, The line hasn't budged yet Penn has a decided 66% edge in public offerings and if that wasn't enough your on Iowa.
