    Front Page MLB Picks (Mon., Aug 18)
    Rays -118 clip LA Angels' wings

    Game Time: 08/18/2008 07:10 PM -
    By: Al McMordie | bigal.com

    This very well could be a preview of the eventual ALCS as the Halos travel to the Sunshine State to meet the Rays. Take Tampa Bay at home Monday night vs. the Angels.

    Our Monday night MLB selection is on the Tampa Bay Rays at home in The Trop over the Los Angeles Angels.

    This could very well be an August preview of the American League Championship Series. Most people agree that the Angels will cruise into the playoffs, having played in easily the weakest division in the American League, but there is a question as to whether that is a good thing or not. If the Rays win their division, it will have been over a tougher road than Anaheim will have travelled and that could prepare the Rays better for October. And Tampa's challenge is getting even more difficult, as three of the Rays regulars are out of action.

    Evan Longoria was making a strong case for AL Rookie of the Year when he went down with a wrist injury, joining outfielder Carl Crawford (hand) and closer Troy Percival, who made his second trip to the DL this season with a knee injury. Fortunately, this team is perhaps the deepest in terms of talent in the league.

    There have been plenty of nice surprises for Tampa (including Percival when healthy) but perhaps the biggest has been the performance of righthanded starter Andy Sonanstine. The Kent State alum's 4.35 ERA may only be about average, but he has 12 wins and more important is the fact that Tampa has won 16 of his 24 starts this year.

    The home team has been dominant in this series lately, taking 12 of the last 14 meetings, and that bodes extremely well for Tampa who is 41-10 in their last 51 games at The Trop. Take the Rays.

    Free Pick: Rays -118

    Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles Under 8½ at Camden

    Game Time: 08/18/2008 07:05 PM -
    By: Alex Smart | who2beton.com

    Sure, the Orioles have been red-hot on offense, but tonight's pitchers should quiet both lineups. Play the Under Monday when Baltimore hosts the Boston Red Sox.

    Jeremy Guthrie (10-8, 3.18 ERA), the Orioles starting pitcher today against the visiting Boston Red Sox, is in red hot form, as is evident by a 7-1 record along with a 2.51 ERA in his last 11 appearances.

    He has been particularly brilliant of late posting a 1.23 ERA while winning four straight starts. The former Stanford standout has allowed exactly one earned in nine of his last 14 starts, and another top effort is going to be on tap today against a Boston batting order that has suddenly gone cold after scoring just five times in losing both contests of a weekend set against the Toronto Blue Jays.

    Meanwhile, the BoSox will return fire with a top-tier pitcher of their own, Jon Lester (11-4, 3.25 ERA). The southpaw hurler is 8-1 along with a stingy 2.87 ERA over his last 12 outings, and also owns a stellar 4-0 mark along with a 3.25 ERA in six career outing versus the Orioles. I know the young thrower will face baseball's most explosive offense since the All-Star break, but this kid is something special and will be primed and capable of cooling the Os bats in this spot. With that said, I am recommending a wager on the Under.

    Free Pick: Red Sox-Orioles Under 8½ (-105)

      Rangers -111 vs. Detroit Tigers

      Game Time: 08/18/2008 08:05 PM -
      By: Marc Lawrence | playbook.com

      Scott Feldman has pitched much better at home for the Rangers while Kenny Rogers has been very beatable on the road for the Tigers. Take Texas in this series opener vs. Detroit.

      The Rangers and Detroit Tigers get together in Texas in Game 1 of this three-game series when Scott Feldman meets Kenny Rogers.

      After a shaky start, Feldman is rounding into form for the Rangers where his home ERA (4.28) is dramatically better than his road ERA (6.04) this season. With Rogers sporting a dismal 5.40 ERA away from home, look for the Tigers to dip to 2-8 in their last 10 appearances on Mondays here tonight.

      Free Pick: Rangers -111

        Pittsburgh Pirates +125 to upset New York Mets, Maine

        Game Time: 08/18/2008 12:35 PM -
        By: LT Profits Sports Group | who2beton.com

        Paul Maholm is 6-1 with a 3.06 ERA at home, while Maine has not worked deep into games, which should mean an early call to the lousy Mets pen. Go Bucs.

        John Maine of the New York Mets has walked more men this year than in past seasons while Paul Maholm of the Pittsburgh Pirates has been great at home, so the Bucs get the upset call in this very early matinee.

        In fact, Maholm is an unbelievable 6-1 at home while pitching for a team that is 14 games under .500, with a nice 3.06 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in his own stadium. Maholm has also handled the Mets well, going a perfect four for four in Quality Starts against them the last two years.

        Maine is 10-7 overall, but he has not pitched well on the road where he is 5-6 with a rather high 1.42 WHIP. While he has allowed a respectable 65 hits in 70.2 road innings, it is his 35 walks in 70.2 road innings that has inflated his WHIP and prevented him from working deep into games. His last start at Washington was a typical one, as he allowed no runs and just one hit, but he lasted just five innings as he threw 90 pitches.

        A short outing here would mean an early call to the Mets bullpen, which has been a disaster area since Billy Wagner went on the Disables List. All things considered, this is nice value for Pittsburgh at home.

        Free Pick: Pirates +125

            Pitchers Prevail: Oakland A's and Minnesota Twins Under 8

            Game Time: 08/18/2008 08:10 PM -
            By: Ron Raymond | phoenixsports.com

            The Twins' Nick Blackburn and Justin Duchscherer of the A's should prove too strong for the hitters tonight when Minnesota hosts Oakland in the first game of their series.

            Talk about two teams going North and South! The Oakland A’s seem to have fallen apart since the trade deadline and they’ll be facing the Minnesota Twins as a +115 road underdog tonight.

            The A’s are 3-7 SU in their last 10 games, while the Twins are 8-2 SU in their last 10. In fact, if you’re looking for a nice angle on the side, the Twins are 11-2 SU as a home favorite the first game of a series this season.

            However, I’m recommending the Under 8.0 (-130) in tonight’s AL showdown. Although both teams seem to have the Over momentum going, especially for Minnesota whose last three games have gone over the total, the Under is the play. Here’s a team trend on the Under with the A’s that has cashed a ticket 81% of the time the last five years when Oakland plays on the road:
            • Vs an AL opponent;
            • Coming off a series loss, and;
            • Coming off a loss to an AL Central opponent;
            • The Under is 9-2-0 for the A’s in this spot the last five years.

            Furthermore, if you’re looking for a league system which involves any team coming off an exact situation, here’s an Under system trend that has cashed 64% of the time this seaso:
            • Any MLB road team this season;
            • Coming off a non division game vs. American League opponent
            • Coming off a two-game losing streak;
            • Coming off a day game;
            • Coming off a loss in Game 3 of a series;

            The Under is 11-6-0 this season for the road team in this role. Play the Under in tonight’s Oakland vs. Minnesota game and good luck.

              Houston Astros and Milwaukee Brewers to slug Over 7½

              Game Time: 08/18/2008 08:05 PM -
              By: Jimmy the Moose | sportspic.com

              Both offenses for the Astros and Brewers can send this one over the posted total. Play the Over at Miller Park on Monday evening when Milwaukee hosts Houston.

              Houston has played the Over in four of their last five vs. a team with a winning record. The over is 5-1 in their last six road games and 5-1 in their last six vs. NL Central opponents. The Astros have played over the total in four of their last six overall.

              The Over is 5-0 in Milwaukee's last five home games vs. a team with a winning record. In their last eight home games vs. a left-handed starter, the Over is 7-1. The Over is 7-2-1 in the Brewers' last 10 home games. The teams have played over the total in four of their last five meetings. Play the Over.

              Free Pick: Astros-Brewers Over 7½ (-110)
