Phills and Dodgers enter tonight’s first of four deeply entrenched within their respectful divisions with Philly two-games up on the Mets in the East and the Dodgers trailing the Snakes by a game and a half in the West. Each club enters this series off disappointing efforts over the weekend.
Yes, the Phillies took 2 of 3 from the Buccos, but they struggled to do so, and the Dodgers inexplicably lost 2 of 3 to the hated SF Giants.
Game 1 of the series pits (10-5) Kyle Kendrick against (8-10) Derek Lowe. We came large on Kendrick in his last start at home over the Florida Marlins and Annibal Sanchez, and we came away very happy as the Phills shut-out the fish 5-0. Lowe is coming off the worst effort of his season where he lasted just 3 1/3rd giving up a whopping 13 hits and 8 ER’s in the Dodgers 9-6 road defeat at the hands of the Cardinals.
Now I know Philly just flat out wins when Kendrick toes the bump (16-7 in 23 starts), but Lowe is a veteran that just had his bell rung and he’s been at his best this year at Dodger Stadium where he’s 6-5 with a stellar 2.72 ERA and 0.93 WHIP.
He’s allowed a total of nine runs in his L/5 Chavez Ravine starts (1.8 runs /start).
He also boasts an impressive track record against the Phillies going 3-1 with a 2.61 ERA and 1.16 WHIP in six career starts.
His last start against them came last year at CBP where he limited Philly to just six hits and three-runs through seven innings in LA’s dominating 15-3 win. Kendrick’s faced the Dodgers twice in his career, giving up four and five earned runs respectively (both home & away).
Tonight’s game marks the beginning of an important 10-game home stretch for the Dodgers with series slated to go against the Phillies, Brewers, and Rockies. With the Phillies struggling at the plate (.208 avg L/10 vs. righties scoring a total of 17 runs L/6 overall games) and Lowe looking to make amends for his poor effort last week, I look for the Dodgers to take Game 1 of this series in front of a packed Dodgers Stadium…
