Baseball Underdog of the Day Contest - Thursday, 7/17/08
Starting Tuesday (July 1), we will start a new July Baseball Underdog of the Day Contest with a prize of $100 account at 5 Dimes, 3 time roll-over. Last place will receive a $25 5 Dimes account with a 3 time roll over. If there is a tie for last place in both units and wins (20 plays minimum), there will be be multiple last place boobie prizes.

    *IMPORTANT*
All players must have an account at 5 Dimes prior to making picks SIGN UP Here.

Before participating, players must PM their 5 Dimes account ID to SBRforum Staff

    1. Check in the BASEBALL HANDICAPPING FORUM each day for the daily thread to be posted by LT Profits. Lines will be posted by 1:00 p.m. (ET) each day. Plays may be posted before that, but the official posted lines will be used for grading.

    2. Only the UNDERDOGS in games posted by LT will be eligible for selection, which will be only games that have underdog prices of greater than +110.

    3. All plays will be RISKING one unit, and selections may NOT be changed once posted.

    4. Here’s the catch: Your play must include a write-up! The write-up does not have to be long, just a sentence or two (or more) about why you are making your play.

    5. Entries that are past-post or do not have analysis will be NO ACTION. Any edited post will count as a LOSS! If you make a mistake, need to add analysis or wish to enter a corrected line, do so in a separate post. This holds true even if the first game on the schedule did not go off yet. It also holds true for past-posts and entries with no analysis. It does NOT hold true for posts that are not contest selections, i.e. standings, commentary posts, LT's notes to posters or congratulatory posts.
*-EXCEPTION: If someone edits a post on the last day of the competition in an attempt to get an automatic loss in order to win the Last Place prize, then the original post will stand.

    6. And here’s the fine print:

    • Must be 18 years of age or older to participate.
    • One entry per home and computer.
    • Must use lines posted in daily thread by LT Profits
    • Maximum one underdog pick per day, minimum 20 underdog plays required to be eligible for monthly prize.
    • Tiebreaker for first place is total WINS. If still tied, combatants will carry on a head-to-head underdog match until winner is determined. This would begin on the first day of next month with no passes allowed. If co-leader passes during tie-breaking period, he or she is eliminated, even if other co-leaders lose.
    • All decisions made by SBR with regards to this contest are final.
    • SBR employees eligible to participate but are not eligible to win the monthly prize.

Maholm went 8 innings his last start against the Yankees only giving up 2 runs, I look for him to keep it going here. Jimenez has been strong of late as well but I give a slight advantage to the Pirates offense.

Reds +130, not many choices to choice from, plus looking to take last place. The Red's Cueto has been great at times. With the break the Mets may have cooled off a bit.

Offense and pitching edges to the Pirates here, imo.
Hopefully they come up with the road win to open their second half.

          Good luck everybody!

            PIT +

Maholm has a nice 6-5, 3.93 record.......Ubaldo has done well recently but was shelled earlier in the year. Last time PIT played in COL, Maholm pitched and won, when Colorado was playing much better than they have this atrocious year. Both teams BA and OPS match up, but PIT averages 4.89 runs a game, more than a half run better than the 4.36 put up by the Rockies.

REDS +125: Santana is obviously one of the best pitchers in baseball, but he uncharacteristically allowed 10 hits in six innings in his only start vs. the Reds this year, and that was in Shea Stadium. He is now facing them in this bandbox ballpark with hot weather expected, which is when the ball carries best here. Also, Cueto has pitched better than his 4.67 ERA would indicate, and he does have a nice 1.20 WHIP at home.

Line is too high here IMO. Maholm has been pitching well of late. In his last 3 starts he has 23 innings with an era of 1.96. He has faced the Rocks twice in his career with an era of 3.75. The Rocks were losers of 4 in a row before the all star break and I can see them losing another on this evening against the Pirates.

The mets have to lose sometime and why not on the road. They dont give Santana much support this year and hopefully they dont tonight as well.

cincinati. Can't miss any days now. Figure you got to have 6 picks just to be live by now. Cueto is pretty strong and the Mets no good. Santana not that strong. But only since your holding a gun to my head.

Maholm is hot, pitching back to back 8 inning games, one being against the Yankees. Pirates are 4th biggest scoring team in NL.

They have a better shot at winning than Maholm does. Balls fly out of Coors field and the Rockies crush lefties. Cueto can be an ace, especially at home. While the Reds don't have much success against lefties, there is a lot of value in taking them as a dog at home.

Going with Maholm here to get me going in the 2'nd half of this contest.
Having Doumit hitting one out in the light air of Coors Field helps seal the win!

Two mediocre lineups with decent power and a game that can easily go either way. Jimenez is very talented and capable, but inconstency has bothered him this season. Coors might be tough place for Maholm, but he has been effective for most of the summer. He might very well match the outing of Jimenez. Taking them at +142 as I think The Pirates have a realistic shot here.
