Take every team's last 20 games and put all their runs into a spreadsheet. Do the same for the pitchers' earned runs given up in their last 10 games. Run the Excel standard deviation formula and find the teams and pitchers with the lowest standard deviation. What does that mean? It means those pitchers and those teams are very consistent game to game. When you bet on them YOU KNOW what you are going to get.
For instance a team like the Yankees is volatile. One game they'll score 12 runs, next game 2 runs. They "turn it on" when they feel like it. An opposite sort of team is the Giants. They'll score three runs every game without fail. Now who you gonna bet on?
Same with pitchers. Tim Hudson is going to give up two runs every game .... and no more. Next, you have someone like Volcano Volquez, who can pitch a no-hitter but then give up 6 runs in his next start.
In other words, find where the most volatility is, and run the hell away from it! ..... and into cashComment -
