Baseball Underdog of the Day Contest - Monday, 7/07/08
Starting Tuesday (July 1), we will start a new July Baseball Underdog of the Day Contest with a prize of $100 account at 5 Dimes, 3 time roll-over. Last place will receive a $25 5 Dimes account with a 3 time roll over. If there is a tie for last place in both units and wins (20 plays minimum), there will be be multiple last place boobie prizes.

    *IMPORTANT*
All players must have an account at 5 Dimes prior to making picks SIGN UP Here.

Before participating, players must PM their 5 Dimes account ID to SBRforum Staff

    1. Check in the BASEBALL HANDICAPPING FORUM each day for the daily thread to be posted by LT Profits. Lines will be posted by 1:00 p.m. (ET) each day. Plays may be posted before that, but the official posted lines will be used for grading.

    2. Only the UNDERDOGS in games posted by LT will be eligible for selection, which will be only games that have underdog prices of greater than +110.

    3. All plays will be RISKING one unit, and selections may NOT be changed once posted.

    4. Here’s the catch: Your play must include a write-up! The write-up does not have to be long, just a sentence or two (or more) about why you are making your play.

    5. Entries that are past-post or do not have analysis will be NO ACTION. Any edited post will count as a LOSS! If you make a mistake, need to add analysis or wish to enter a corrected line, do so in a separate post. This holds true even if the first game on the schedule did not go off yet. It also holds true for past-posts and entries with no analysis. It does NOT hold true for posts that are not contest selections, i.e. standings, commentary posts, LT's notes to posters or congratulatory posts.
*-EXCEPTION: If someone edits a post on the last day of the competition in an attempt to get an automatic loss in order to win the Last Place prize, then the original post will stand.

    6. And here’s the fine print:

    • Must be 18 years of age or older to participate.
    • One entry per home and computer.
    • Must use lines posted in daily thread by LT Profits
    • Maximum one underdog pick per day, minimum 20 underdog plays required to be eligible for monthly prize.
    • Tiebreaker for first place is total WINS. If still tied, combatants will carry on a head-to-head underdog match until winner is determined. This would begin on the first day of next month with no passes allowed. If co-leader passes during tie-breaking period, he or she is eliminated, even if other co-leaders lose.
    • All decisions made by SBR with regards to this contest are final.
    • SBR employees eligible to participate but are not eligible to win the monthly prize.

The deadline for entering plays in the contest and still being eligible for prizes is Saturday, July 12.

      Twinkies!!! I want'em I want'em I want'em.
      Minnesota +160 3 units.
Minny 5-1 in last 6 against the Bosox, and all my other reasons are in Illusion's Fade Minnesota thread.
I go to go to work at 5:00 mountain time, game starts at 5:05, so the last thing I'll do before I get into my jeep is grab as much + on the Twinkies as I can.

        Twins

The Twins have been playing very good ball for some time now. They don't have that much power, but they are a very balanced team with patient lineup that gets on base consistently. Couple that with a solid pen and rotation, they are a tough team to face for anyone right now. Boston is a great home team and Matsuzaka is very good pitcher, but he might still have durability issues and not go that deep. Baker is solid and should be able to keep the game competitive. I'll take Twins pen in late innings over Sox pen. Some value on the Twins as a nice sized road dog.

Marlins, if they're eligible. They came back strong yesterday after two humiliating defeats in Denver. And, despite winning 2 of 3 in AZ, the Padres are awful. Gotta also give the edge to the Florida bats vs. Maddux over the Padres vs. Nolasco.

It's the only dog I like that has a legitimate chance to win. Wasburn has an ERA of 2.30 in his last two starts and won last two games in a row.

Rangers +127 They are a home dog which I love in baseball. They are getting no respect since Mendoza is scheduled to start. Now that he's getting a start at home he'll turn around his fortunes.

ASTROS +116: This is a contest only selection for me. What exactly have the Pirates done to be laying these odds here? Granted, Hernandez has not done much for Houston since his recall, but Dumatrait has a hideous 9.19 ERA and 1.72 WHIP in his last three starts for Pittsburgh. So this starting matchup is virtually a wash and Houston has the edge in the other phases of the game. This looks like decent value for the Astros, as we feel the Pirates should be closer to -110 here.

Underdogs at home? I like those odds. Mendoza only gave away 1 ER last time around against the Yankees, I don't see why he can't do it again.

LT , you don't think those 17 innings is gonna affect them ? It always intrigues me when I see bottom teams favoured, I often think its a strong side and that the oddsmakers agree..

Trying to catch the Bosox with a little NYYankee hangover on a sleepy Monday game. The Twins are playing very good ball at this time. They have won 5 straight and 8 of their last 10. Baker comes into this game pitching well while DiceK has been struggling a bit (6.55 era in his last 3 starts).

Dumatrait walks far to many batters to ever be favored at any time. Astros did use their pen up yesterday but i feel they will put up big offensive numbers tonight so it won't matter.
