    Picks for April 8, 2011

Washington Nationals @ New York Mets (4:10 PM ET)

Zimmerman is just coming off Tommy John surgery, so he should see he best starts of the year come in May/June once he shakes the rust off. Even when he's healthy, who can trust Storen or any pitcher in that young Nats pen to get the job done. The Mets have to be pleased sitting at 3-3 so far this season, and that should carry over into solid offensive production at home against a recuperating Washington pitching staff. They'll need to today, as Washington has had a fair amount of success against Dickey who is coming off a great performance in warm, sunny Florida. I think the cooler weather of the northeast could affect his movement making this soft number at plus money well worth a shot.
Pick: [901] Total Runs Over 7½ +105 (Bookmaker)
Risk 1 unit to win 1.05 units

Texas Rangers @ Baltimore Orioles (7:05 PM ET)

This is the case again of another high caliber pitcher (citing Verlander a few days back) in their prime coming to the Orioles, who seemingly going to fight for a spot in the AL East, as low road chalk. The Orioles started out against the Rays who may have the worst lineup this year (without Longoria) and beefed up their confidence, but the reigning AL champs are night and day from the Rays. The Rangers are just 1 behind the league leader (Angels) with 117 total bases through 6 games, and do lead the league in OPS. Normally with a small line of -120 or less I take the ML, but the RL offers too great a value to pass up.
    Pick: [921] Texas Rangers -1½ +158 (5Dimes)
Risk 1 unit to win 1.58 units

Toronto Blue Jays @ Los Angeles Angels (10:05 PM ET)

Another match up much like the Mets game with a overvalued veteran (Santana) and a rising rookie sensation (Drabek). Once again I feel the sub-8 number offers value as Drabek is now put on the road against the hottest hitting team in the league who are averaging over 11 hits per game through the first week. Angel's bullpen hasn't instilled any confidence in me yet, and if the Jays are down, we likely won't see Toronto's top guns unless they make a comeback. I will gladly take what I feel is a number capable of being set over by either squad.
Pick: [927] Total Runs Over 7½ -105 (BetJamaica)
Risk 1.05 units to win 1 unit

    Picks for April 9, 2011

Texas Rangers @ Baltimore Orioles (4:35 PM & 7:35 PM ET)
The Orioles are in some deep waters right now. Likely without their star Brain Roberts (or at least not at 100%), I see a disaster on tap for the O’s. Now they very well may rally behind the absense of their veteran pitchers and sidelined all-stars, but with tags like this and the 6-0 Rangers in town now fresh off two full days rest I can’t refuse. The Rangers are just 1 behind the league leader (Angels) with 117 total bases through 6 games, and do lead the league in OPS. Normally with a small line of -120 or less I take the ML, but the RL offers too great a value. Call me a sucker, but I think they could do some serious damage, so I’m taking both games!
    Pick: [981] Texas Rangers -1½ +145 (5Dimes)
Risk 1 unit to win 1.45 units

    Pick: [973] Texas Rangers -1½ +160 (5Dimes)
Risk 1 unit to win 1.60 units

Cleveland Indians @ Seattle Mariners (9:10 ET)
I’m going against Doug Fister again until this soft-tosser shows me he can muster some run support from that putrid lineup. These are two teams trending in opposite directions, literally 5-0 vs 0-5. Masterson has been a very intriguing question mark the past few seasons gaining attention while never really delivering results. I think this year may prove to be different as the spotlight is now put towards the up and coming offensive players (eg – Santana, Cabrera) for the Tribe. Chris Perez is an unsung hero in the 9th, and I’ll gladly roll the dice for an encore presentation.
Pick: [979] Cleveland Indians +106 (BetJamaica)
Risk 1 unit to win 1.06 units

Cincinnati Reds @ Arizona Diamondbacks (8:10 PM ET)
Just like the Indians, the Dbacks are looking for an encore presentation, and I couldn’t have picked a better person to do it. Daniel Hudson is Arizona’s true ace, and Arroyo is a pitcher with a declining skill set. Not to mention he’s lost muscle mass thanks to mono. Just like Perez, Putz is a HUGE upgrade for them in the 9th. In fact, just read the paragraph above… you’ll always see lots of correlations in my picks, but that’s how I stay consistent!
Pick: [962] Arizona Diamondbacks -106 (BetJamaica)
Risk 1.06 units to win 1 unit

      Picks for April 10, 2011

Washington Nationals @ New York Mets (1:10 PM ET)
Marquis was lucky to get by the Marlins last time with only giving up 2 runs. I think to few forget how horrendous Marquis was last year in his limited first year with the Nationals, but he had an ERA over 6.60 ERA in 13 games. Only reason he's still in this rotation is because of the fat 7.5 million dollars he's owed this year. That money can't very well be going to Syracuse. Chris Young is a dark horse rising from the ashes or a couple injury-plagued seasons, and I feel it's worth the risk of betting a home team runline against the Nasty Nats and their bullpen woes. C'mon C.Y., show us all the dominance you possess!
      Pick: [902] New York Mets -1½ +155 (5Dimes)
Risk 1 unit to win 1.55 units

St Louis Cardinals @ San Francisco Giants (4:05 PM ET)
What a win for the Giants in their Opening Day... so why are they only pulling a little chalk against the 2-6 Cardinals? Well Zito's control issues were hidden in a neat little sub-3.00 spring ERA, plus the history against the Cardinals allow for some nice value here I believe. Granted Pujols hasn't been his normal self this year, but he also hasn't had Matt Holliday backing him up. Today that should happen for the first time in the 2011 season, so I expect production from the middle of this line up for once. Enough to put the game right down memory lane for true Zito followers.
Pick: [913] St Louis Cardinals +116 (BetJamaica)
Risk 1 unit to win 1.16 units

Texas Rangers @ Baltimore Orioles (1:35 PM ET)
Guthrie has rushed himself back to action saying everything is feeling fine after his bout with pneumonia. Not sure I understand the logic to rush him back to face the Rangers (aka the hottest lineup in the country)... unless you had no other options and have AAA pitchers on speed dial. I'm sure for Buck it makes sense, and hopefully Guthrie can provide a mediocre performance worthy of the call. On the other side, Holland returns to Camden Yards where he owns a 9.00+ ERA in his short career. I'll take the key number in hopes the Rangers ride the momentum from Game 2 and put up 9 of their own... and maybe the O's can make it a close one.
      Pick: [919] Total Runs Over 9 +100 (5Dimes)
Risk 1 unit to win 1 unit

Toronto Blue Jays @ Los Angeles Angels (3:35 PM ET)
Only one way for me to see this game. You have one of the most dangerous, hottest hitting teams at home behind a pitcher who I feel will be in the running for the Cy Young Award against Jo-Jo Reyes and the Blue Birds in a day game on the West Coast. Now there's good reason for the -200 tag, this one is justified and makes the even the runline a good value. I know taking two home team runline plays is a risky proposition, but the situation more than calls for it in my opinion. Weaver will likely go 7-8 innings at least helping lower the chance for a bullpen catastrophe.
      Pick: [926] Los Angeles Angels -1½ +118 (5Dimes)
Risk 1 unit to win 1.18 units

            Picks for April 11, 2011

Colorado Rockies @ New York Mets (7:10 PM ET)
Pelfrey has been a gas can since the start of the season, and I don't see any reason for that to stop now with the Rockies in town. These are teams trending in opposite directions as the Mets have gone 1-4 in their last 5 games while hitting the over in all 5. You can't trust this bullpen with the lead, and now we're seeing what it's like without the lead. Better yet, no weary Huston Street time bomb tonight... give the ball to Betancourt or Lindstrom!
            Pick: [951] Colorado Rockies -102 (5Dimes)
Risk 1.02 units to win 1 unit

St Louis Cardinals @ Arizona Diamondbacks (9:40 PM ET)
No need for me to hop off the Cardinals just yet. They cruised past the Giants 6-1 yesterday still without productions from Pujols. This is a humbling game, but Albert is a humble person and he just needs a lame duck to serve him up some confidence soup. Enright could very well be that person. He's a 70% fastball thrower who gave up 20 bombs in less than 100 innings last year. That's ugly. Holliday is back, so I'm staying on this train for at least one more day.
Pick: [955] St Louis Cardinals -115 (Bookmaker)
Risk 1.15 units to win 1 unit

Toronto Blue Jays @ Seattle Mariners (10:10 PM ET)
I never like to go up against King Felix, but this position warrants the choice. The M's lineup is so weak that Litsch could easily match Felix's production. He's got the hottest pen in the league backing him up, and the Jays are 8-0 in the first game of the series stretching back to last year. While I'm close to seeing this game is a toss up, the huge tag makes it worth the play seeing as the M's are hitting .177 in the last five games are are still without a win at home.
            Pick: [969] Toronto Blue Jays +161 (5Dimes)
Risk 1 unit to win 1.61 units

How can you not like what Tulowitzki brings to this game!?! Crazy story, but I actually played in the same little league with him in Cupertino, CA when I was 10 years old... I'm calling it now, he's the NL MVP this year.

                    Picks for April 12, 2011

Chicago Cubs @ Houston Astros (8:05 PM ET)
Myers is lacking respect here, fully expect the Astros to take advantage of Russell who started ZERO games last year in AAA, and only 12 the year before that. This was a starter turned reliever turned back to starter given the situation, and he may not even throw 50 pitches. Have to appreciate his flexibility, but from a betting perspective I'm always going to be on the other side until I'm proven otherwise.
                    Pick: [910] Houston Astros -1½ +170 (5Dimes)
Risk 1 unit to win 1.7 units

St Louis Cardinals @ Arizona Diamondbacks (9:40 PM ET)
Somehow Enright was a more appealing option to Gibson than Gallaragga. I only see this match-up continuing the way it got started yesterday. They cruised past the Giants 6-1 on Sunday still without productions from Pujols. Won again yesterday 8-2 with no production from Pujols... it's scary to think what this lineup is going to be capable of when he and Holliday finally do start hitting, because we all know they will! No fear in the runline on this one with Carp on the hill.
                    Pick: [911] St Louis Cardinals -1½ +115 (5Dimes)
Risk 1 unit to win 1.15 unit

Kansas City Royals @ Minnesota Twins (8:20 PM ET)
Francis is pitching more like the 1st round draft pick he was back before the thin air of Colorado got to him. If the Royals can cut down on the errors this year, they have a shot to make some noise the seemingly upside down AL Central standings. Duensing I think surprised a lot of people this year setting a bar that he might not be able to reach in 2011. As another converted reliever, you can see what the theme of today is... I'll take the 1st rounder on the team with a positive run differential.
Pick: [923] Kansas City Royals +135 (Bookmaker)
Risk 1 unit to win 1.35 units

One early play for Wednesday. More plays to come after 1:00 PM ET.

Texas Rangers @ Detroit Tigers (1:05 PM ET)
Scary proposition going against the mighty Texas Rangers, but the loss of Hamilton should knock some wind out of their sails. Dave Bush hasn't thrown an inning yet this season, and I can't imagine him coming out and wowing Ron Washington with something he hasn't seen yet. Simply put, they need an arm to eat 5-6 innings and his name is up. Early day game on the road, so he's not likely going to draw strong arms behind him should he (likely) lose the lead. Scherzer is much better than he's getting credit for right now, and he's has yet to give up a HR to these Rangers in 50+ at bats. Good enough for me to lay the small home chalk.
Pick: [968] Detroit Tigers -131 (BetJamaica)

One win in the bag. Hopefully I can find three more W's today.

                          Cincinnati Reds
@ San Diego Padres (6:35 PM ET)
Let the extra innings be a true show of the offense this team possess. This isn't a play against Stauffer, this is purely a play on offense. I see the starters pretty much crossing each other out, this one is all about the bats staying hot after putting a 6 spot in the top of the 11th late last night knocking the Pads into the NL basement. This team scores in bunches, and against this lifeless SD lineup, they only may need one bunch to get the job done.
                          Pick: [951] Cincinnati Reds -1½ +154 (5Dimes)
Play 1 unit to win 1.54 units

Colorado Rockies @ New York Mets (7:10 PM ET)
Another solid young arm from Colorado, Rogers is more than capable of duplicating his last start. Niese has proven to be a quality option for the Mets in the past, but this bullpen is taxed, and as such he may stay in there one pitch to long tonight. The Mets pen has thrown 38 innings already this year with hitters knocking a solid .323 off them. Rockies look to be legit in a weak NL West division this year, making a plus tag an easy decision most games.
                          Pick: [959] Colorado Rockies +104 (5Dimes)
Risk 1 unit to win 1.04 units

Chicago Cubs @ Houston Astros (8:05 PM ET)
Since when does Carlos Zambrano deserve any respect? With an even line on the road, you're getting respect. Wandy is 21-13 over the past 3 years at home with a 2.59 ERA in close to 300 IP. Now, that deserves respect. Fresh off an 11-2 shellacking, the Cubs should be well within their shells by now. Cubbies can't feel confident in this matchup as they know Big Z is just another big L waiting to happen.
Pick: [962] Houston Astros -105 (BetJamaica)
Risk 1.05 units to win 1 unit

@ Los Angeles Dodgers (10:10 PM ET)
I should have stayed on this team yesterday, but I won't make that mistake again. In fact, the Redbirds are the only team on the board I like today. The back-end of the Dodgers rotation is looking rather old these days, and with an offense struggling to put up runs that usually spells disaster 9 times out of 10. At near even money, it makes sense to say Kuroda won't be able to totally neutralize the Cards tonight. Jaime Garcia has been mowing down the NL West this year, and next up is the Dodgers.
