Baseball Underdog of the Day Contest - Monday, 5/12/08
Starting Thursday (May 1), we will start a new May Baseball Underdog of the Day Contest with a prize of $250 account at BetJamaica, 3 time roll-over. Last place will receive a $25 BetJamaica account with a 3 time roll over. If there is a tie for last place in both units and wins (20 plays minimum), there will be be multiple last place boobie prizes.

    *IMPORTANT*
All players must have an account at BetJamaica prior to making picks Sign up here

Before participating, players must PM their BetJamaica account ID to SBRforum Staff

    1. Check in the BASEBALL HANDICAPPING FORUM each day for the daily thread to be posted by LT Profits. Lines will be posted by 1:00 p.m. (ET) each day. Plays may be posted before that, but the official posted lines will be used for grading.

    2. Only the UNDERDOGS in games posted by LT will be eligible for selection, which will be only games that have underdog prices of greater than +110.

    3. All plays will be RISKING one unit, and selections may NOT be changed once posted.

    4. Here’s the catch: Your play must include a write-up! The write-up does not have to be long, just a sentence or two (or more) about why you are making your play.

    5. Entries that are past-post or do not have analysis will be NO ACTION. Any edited post will count as a LOSS! If you make a mistake, need to add analysis or wish to enter a corrected line, do so in a separate post. This holds true even if the first game on the schedule did not go off yet. It also holds true for past-posts and entries with no analysis. It does NOT hold true for posts that are not contest selections, i.e. standings, commentary posts, LT's notes to posters or congratulatory posts.

    6. And here’s the fine print:

    • Must be 18 years of age or older to participate.
    • One entry per home and computer.
    • Must use lines posted in daily thread by LT Profits
    • Maximum one underdog pick per day, minimum 20 underdog plays required to be eligible for monthly prize.
    • Tiebreaker for first place is total WINS. If still tied, combatants will carry on a head-to-head underdog match until winner is determined. This would begin on the first day of next month with no passes allowed. If co-leader passes during tie-breaking period, he or she is eliminated, even if other co-lealers lose.
    • All decisions made by SBR with regards to this contest are final.
    • SBR employees eligible to participate but are not eligible to win the monthly prize.

Last day to enter contest and be eligible for prizes is May 12.

Wash (+147) (Perez) vs NYM (Figueroa) is too much of a lopsided pitching matchup to ignore. Take the Nats at a great price.

A hot a team, coming off a late inning win. Hopefully, it's decided late by the bullpens. Harang is 0-3 in his last 3.

Gonna stick my neck out here.

                  925 Toronto Blue Jays-G1 +127

TORONTO is 10-1 (+9.7 Units) against the money line after getting shut out over the last 3 seasons.
CLEVELAND is 14-25 (-21.9 Units) against the money line in home games after shutting out their opponent since 1997.

Burnett can pitch a gem today. Just hope that his teammates can hit at least .400 and score at least a few for him

MARLINS +153: The Fish have now won seven straight, yet they are sizable dogs again. Granted, Harang has some of the best stuff in the NL, but he is just 1-5 due to e severe lack of run support. The Reds are batting just .227 vs. right-handed pitchers the last 10 games, so Harang may not get much help tonight either. Young Badenshop has pitched well in limited innings his last two starts, and another five solid innings should be enough with the Florida bullpen ranking third in the majors with a 2.95 ERA.

Zambrano unexpected day off will have him thrown off just a bit and Padres win this low scoring game.

The Braves have better lineup and Jurrjens is slightly better starter here, but Duke, while having quite unspectacular stuff, has been throwing fine and deep keeping his team in the game lately. The Pirates have a good bullpen and has been playing very well at home lately. I like them here as a home dog in a game I estimate very close to a coin flip.

It's the Bullpen System Play with the best odds. As LT already pointed, both starters are suspect. With the Marlins ranked in the top three in BP strength, I agree with him that there is value here.

Hernandez has been off to a great start this year with a 5-1 record. I can't say the same about Buchholz. Buccholz has been awful in away starts this year, posting a 7.40 ERA in that category.

The Marlins continue to find ways to win as they have now won seven straight games to improve their lead to three games in the National League East. Teams that are hot like this need to be played despite what the linesmakers are telling us and in this case they are telling us Florida has no chance. This is a huge number for any below average team to be laying no matter what the starting pitching matchup is. The Marlins are now 11-5 away from home which is the best road record in baseball.

I think the Nationals come into this one hungry for a win, after getting swept by the Marlins at home. Odalis Perez has been pretty good this season, despite his 0-3 record: 3.43 ERA, 1.34 WHIP. In his last outing, he went 5 innings, and gave up 3 runs, at Houston, despite a rather severe illness. He barfed after the first inning (now, aren't you glad you know that?).

But, for the sake of a contest, I'll ride that streak and the +1.53 seems a bit generous. If I remember right, Harang hasn't been any great shakes vs.the Marlins.
