Blue Jays have another Vernon Wells to deal with
Bautista has one good season and recently got a 65 million dollar contract over 5 years + bonuses?

The Jays have plenty of money to spend to get in a real superstar, instead they sign this Jose Bautista guy riding a fluke year?

I think the owners are taking something besides steroids before they hand out some of these contracts. Oh, you meant Bautista

I can't argue with anyone about the amount of money some of the ballplayers are getting now. But Bautista's deal doesn't seem that bad to me assuming he stays healthy and can contribute all five of the guaranteed seasons. I certainly think Toronto stands to get its money's worth far more than the Nationals will realize from the deal they gave Werth.

Bautista's deal is more fiscally sane than Werth's or Dunn's -- especially since Dunn can't play a lick of defense.

Whether Bautista had a fluke year or a breakout season remains to be seen. He definitely enjoyed hitting at the Rogers Centre being a dead pull hitter with the way the ball carried there. He was amazing in clutch situations, had a ton of game winning dingers. Wells has some of the worst plate discipline I have ever seen, was in serious decline defensively and could never come up with a big hit when the Jays needed it. He was great at hitting bombs in 8-1 ballgames though. Bautista also led the AL in outfield assists most of last season and has a cannon of an arm. The two players contracts aren't even comparable, eating Well's contract was easily the dumbest offseason move, just beating out that Werth contract.

Bautista is way better than Vernon Wells, this thread is completely retarded.

If pitchers keep hitting the inside corner with fastballs, the left field fans will keep getting souvenirs.

Besides the team handing out the contract, I can't see too many similarities between Wells and Bautista. Wells' contract was literally unbelievable. I think that they were trying to lock up the team star in an attempt to please the fan base, but when he didn't live up to his contract, actually made the fans hate him. Meanwhile, Bautista has actually been hitting for a year and a half. He was beasting it at the end of the 09 season, and this continued over to the 2010 season. While 1.5 years is probably not a large enough sample size, Bautista's contract is relatively reasonable in this day and age for a legitimate power threat.

Dunn puts up big numbers every year, Bautista's only done it once!

Yeah, Dunn has been steady as they come, an underrated player and not as horrible defensively as many seem to think. His deal with the ChiSox is fine by me as well, not terribly long nor terribly expensive per year.

They're both large contracts given to players with uncertain futures. I wasn't thinking about the $ number at all, but with all the MLSE talk last year that Rogers Jays had over 150 million to spend on baseball talent "when the time is right", it has me wondering, are the Jays just killing time with Bautista, they know he's not going to contribute to a Pennant?

The only thing that scares me about Bautista's output in the future is that he is a one field hitter. He pulls the ball, and that's where his power is. If a pitcher sticks to a gameplan of staying away, he'll have trouble.

Contract not as high money wise as Wells, but I believe the Blue Jays will regret the contract.
