    Padres sign Jorge Cantu
By Mike Axisa [January 24, 2011 at 9:40pm CST]
The Padres and Jorge Cantu have agreed to terms on a Major League contract, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (Twitter links). It's a one-year deal according to MLB.com's Corey Brock and it's worth $850K, according to Marty Caswell of XX 1090 in San Diego (Twitter links). Cantu is represented by the Wasserman Media Group, and the contract is still pending a physical.
Cantu, 29 later this week, hit just .256/.304/.392 in 515 plate appearances for the Marlins and Rangers last season, though he performed at a much more respectable .283/.336/.462 clip from 2008-2009. Capable of playing the corner infield spots and filling in at second in an emergency, he offers some versatility and could platoon with the left-swinging Brad Hawpe at first.
Earlier today we heard that San Diego preferred to sign Cantu to a minor league pact.

As a Padres fan, I love this signing...watch out for the Padres as a sleeper pick this year.

For sub-$1m, its a great signing. Like the move a lot for the Friars.

It's going to be a decent season in San Diego afterall. I can't wait to go to Petco Park now.

Agree. I like the additions the Padres have made this offseason. Making up for Adrian will be tough though...

I like what Jed's been able to do with a low payroll. Wouldn't be surprised to see Ludwick get traded before the deadline and Hawpe put in left, then Cantu or Blanks takes over first. Allows Headley to get some off days once in a while as well.

Damn, even after losing Gonzalez, I think they are better than last season. Once they figured out Hawpe is finished, Cantu will be the primary starter at first!

They lose the most productive player on their team by far and they win the West huh?

How about a 100 SBR points bet that they win less than 80 games?

Padres have zero chance to win the west

No team in sports history has ever won anything after having a major collapse the previous year

With the lost of Adrian, I could still see Bartlet, Hudson, Cantu pick up some ground.
Some don't know, but if Blanks is able to be healthy by April, at least, he can put up some bombs at Petco.
If Hawpe still has something in his bat, he can keep the line-up stable.
And if that piece of shit, Ludwick, decides to play ball without excuses this year, the Padres can become contenders once again.
Maybin won't be starter, his bat sucks, but he will be a late inning OF replacement.

Not positive here, but isn't Blanks out till midseason? Also, I'm pretty sure Maybin is penciled in to be the starting CF when the season hits.

Regardless, even with the loss of Adrian, I think the Padres have added some players that can help fill the gap. To me, the key will be someone breaking out, and carrying the club.

At 850k they don't really have much to lose so I like it.

I'll gladly take this bet. The Padres offense was bad with A-Gon. How much worse could it possibly get? And If you follow the Padres, you would know that they don't try to beat you with offense. They beat you with pitching and good defense. If the Pads can get 2 runs, they will most likely win as they have good starting pitching and the best bullpen in baseball

How about a 100 SBR points bet that they win less than 80 games?
