I cap based on a multitude of factors, and none of them being my "gut". Intuition? Slightly, as when a team is ready to start a winning streak or when I feel the bats wont show up, but thats rare.

Starting pitching/bullpen/homeruns/Team batting stats.

Starting pitching i like to look at the last 5 starts or so. Also like to look at how they perform in different parks and how they have matched up in the past to a particular opponent.
