Verlander...he throws hard ...imagine playing the first game of the year going vs 100mph fast ball in 45 degree weather...on the other side Meche is not a hard thrower...more of a movement or placement pitcher and in colder weather he won't be able to get the same type of grip on the ball as on hotter days...balls hit in colder weather also don't carry as well either...which I like for the tigers as they have the better all around team so less likely a 3 run homer gets hit off of them and ruins the game...patient lineups benefit the most...both pitchers could give up walks but Verlander is more likely to either get himself out of trouble with a K or with their lineup...really like the Tigers here IMVG...

Verlander gave up 14 runs his last 3 springs starts...doesn't he won't come out strong...if the total is 8.5 I'll probably take the over and not play a side on this one...

The Royals offense exploded in Spring Training this year against alot of starting pitchers. Meche looked great in Spring and the Royals finished 16-14 under the new manager. This is not your momma's Royals, and they will be ready for Verlander, especially if Guillen is in the line-up and not suspended for the game. If you don't know what I'm talking about there, you probably shouldn't be betting this game.

-Verlander finished the spring with a 1-2 record and 5.85 ERA in six outings.

-Meche finished with a 3-2 record and 3.74 ERA in five games.

-Meche is 4-1 lifetime at Commercia Park, and he was the Opening Day starter last year when the Royals beat the Red Sox 7-1.

-Last year Verlander finished w/ a 3.66 ERA and 183 Ks. Meche was 3.67 with 156 Ks.

-Meche and Verlander are comparable pitchers, but Sporting News acknowledges that the Royals have the stronger bullpen than Detroit.

-The Royals got alot of run production in the Spring and it is now confirmed that Guillen (23 HR last year) will start for the Royals on Opening Day. Obviously Detroit has a very powerful line-up.

Bottom Line
I think the Royals have 45-47% chance of winning this game, so if they are fetching +130 or better that will be too much value for me to pass up.

It's hard not to take the Tigers when they have five batters who hit over .300 last year. Leon Nunez and Soria saved the Royals today and Meche had a solid outing. An all-round great way for the Royals to start their season, as most folks have Detroit picked first!

You're right...I feel like a kid. I probably won't be able to see the Royals beat the Tigers many more times this year and yet it happened on Opening Day in Detroit. I hope it is a good omen, but I have been down this road before. I really like this new manager, though. During team photos, he made the team fold and put their own chairs away.
