santana to be traded within the next 10 days?
Charley Walters of the St. Paul Pioneer Press expects a Johan Santana deal to get done within the next 10 days.
Walters doesn't list the Mets, Red Sox or Yankees as favorites, though he does say the Twins again tried and failed to get the Angels involved. ESPN's Buster Olney has sources telling him that Jon Lester is now off the table, suggesting Boston's current offer could be built around Jacoby Ellsbury. There's been little lately to indicate the Mets or Yankees have adjusted their offers.

If this is true, I think it's a mistake on Boston's end. In my opinion, Lester's performance last season was actually a bit of a disappointment. Maybe that can be attributed to his medical history and regaining strength, but I don't project him as a front-of-the-rotation guy, but more of a solid No. 3 starter. Furthermore, in a potential deal with the Twins involving Santana, you'd be getting the preeminent LHP in the game in what should be the prime of his career to replace Lester's spot in the rotation. And with Lester's performance in Game 4 of the World Series, his trade value will likely never be higher.

I guess Boston's rationale is that a lefty starter is more valuable than a CF. While that notion may be true if the players are of near or equal talent, I don't think that's the case here. Lester will be a good to very good pitcher, while Ellsbury's a star.

i just dont think lester has the control nor the variance in speed that he'll need to dominate in the al east. both could come, but i dont see it right now. that being said, beckett and johan vs king felix and bedard is a playoff series i'd pay to watch.

According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the Twins may soon ask the Yankees, Red Sox and Mets to "step up with their best offers" for Johan Santana.
The newspaper reports that "Twins officials over the weekend maintained that all three teams remain interested in Santana," disputing previous speculation that the Red Sox took Jon Lester off the table. Some reports have suggested that the Yankees have taken Phil Hughes off the table, which would make it nearly impossible for them to acquire Santana.

Despite ESPN's claim, George Sherrill said he has not been told he'll be taking a physical for the Orioles.
So much bad information. "ESPN said online that Adam Jones and I are going to Baltimore to take physicals," Sherrill said. "We're not." Sherrill, who would be the favorite to close in Baltimore, is rumored to be going with Jones, Chris Tillman and at least one more prospect to the Orioles for Erik Bedard. "I only know that as of right now, I haven't been asked to go for a physical," he said.
