Sipkin/NewsThe New York Yankees are 12-0 this
season when A-Rod is out of the lineup.

At least there's no need for Alex Rodriguez
to rush back from the disabled list.

    With Sunday's 10-0 shelling of Seattle, a
game Rodriguez sat out with a calf injury,

the Yankees improved to 12-0 this season
in games without A-Rod in the lineup.
Might the All-Star third baseman find
himself in a fight for playing time if they're
still undefeated when he returns from the
disabled list on or after Sept. 5?

"Let's hope we get to that point - and then
I'll put him in there the next day,"
    Joe
    Girardi
    joked before the game.

Girardi added that no tests on Rodriguez's
tight left calf were scheduled as of Sunday,
but he indicated that A-Rod was slated to
travel with the Yanks Sunday night to be
with the team during this week's trip to

    Toronto
    and Chicago.

GM Brian Cashman also said in an email
Sunday night that no tests are scheduled
and "you will see (Rodriguez) in Toronto
    and Chicago, as well."

Rodriguez was placed on the DL Saturday
after coming out of Friday's 6-0 loss after
one at-bat because of the same ailment
that had sidelined him the previous three
    games.

"It wasn't like we did this on a whim. We
consulted, we had him work out, we had
him do things," Girardi said. "The one thing

Girardi said. "The one thing that's always hard to simulate without sending a guy on rehab is playing in the game.
"I think Alex felt he was ready, too. No one knows Alex's body better than he does. No one knows how he feels better than he does. You have to listen to the patient, as well. And he felt he was ready to go. It just didn't work out."
PR director Jason Zillo had said Saturday that A-Rod would address the media yesterday, but Rodriguez wasn't available before or after the game.
    SUPER NOVA
Yankee fans are going to get a good look at one of the organization's most successful prospects on Monday night when righthander Ivan Nova makes his first big league start to open a three-game series in Toronto. Nova was 12-3 with a 2.86 ERA in 23 starts this season for Triple-A Scranton.
"This is a big opportunity for me," Nova said. "I just have to go out and do my job."
"He's got good stuff," Girardi said. "He's got velocity, as well. I liked him in spring training. When he came up and pitched a couple innings in Detroit (in May), he threw strikes. It seems like he's got pretty good command."
It wasn't a comfortable position for Nova back in May because the starter was being asked to pitch relief. Still, he threw three scoreless innings in two appearances. Nova will be in his comfort zone lockering next to infielder Eduardo Nunez, his long-time road-trip roomie in the minors.
