Why is it weird? Better for them to chew gum than to dip tobacco.

remnant of the tobacco days. Used to be a ton of guys dipping.

MLB discourages it now, so a lot of guys have taken up gum-chewing, sunflower seeds, etc.

Bubbleheads.......

In every MLB clubhouse and dugout there is a small barrel
filled with bubblegum, another with sunflower seeds.
Ditto bottled water and Gatorade.

This has been a time-honored tradition in baseball ever
since the first
million dollar contract was signed.

Every kid chews bubble gum in Little League....
the addiction is full-blown by the time they hit "the show".
Intervention by your dentist may be the only cure.
