Prior looks to be headed west
ESPN's Buster Olney says the Padres are the front-runners to sign free agent Mark Prior.

Prior's decision could come within the next day or two. The Rangers, Astros, Cardinals and Mets have also talked to the right-hander.

that would be the ideal situation for Prior.

I wish him many days on the DL if he signs somewhere other than Houston

You can start wishing away Willie because Prior agreed to terms with San Diego.

Mark Prior, cut loose by the Cubs earlier this month, has agreed to terms with the San Diego Padres.

An announcement is expected to come sometime Wednesday.

Prior, 27, last pitched in the big leagues in 2006, and had shoulder surgery in April of 2007.

The second overall pick in the 2001 draft, Prior went 18-6 for the Cubs in 2003 before experiencing a series of physical problems. He was born in San Diego and lives in San Diego County, and the Padres' hope is that he is able to join a rotation that already includes Jake Peavy, Chris Young, Greg Maddux and Randy Wolf.

He has been throwing on flat ground, and to date, has been free of pain since his surgery.

Prior's lifetime record in the big leagues is 42-29, with a 3.51 ERA.

I think Willie will be wishing that he was pitching for Houston this year, because I think he will win about 11 to 12 games for the Padres.

Ought to show just how desperate the Astros are for arms right now for them to be considering Benson. His wife will not be too welcome by the other church going wives on the club, that's for certain.

Interesting. Ex-Cubs pitchers generally start putting it together when they leave Chicago. Throw a healthy Prior in with Peavy, Young, and Maddux ... that's pretty lethal.
