First the recap. Went 2-0 last night winning with the Over in the Twins game and the Dodgers in the late game. We got a few games on the board for the afternoon, but I'm looking at one. The Red Sox/Angels game. Red Sox are going for the 3 game sweep on the road and they will ask Josh Beckett to finish it off. Angels now go back to the original Game 1 starter Joel Pineiro who was replaced by the newly acquired Dan Haren. Weird season going for Josh Beckett, he has started 9 games this year and somehow has managed to get 7 no decisions and only 1 win. He was recently called back up and showed a strong outing against the Mariners going 5.2 only giving up 5 hits and 1 run, but again he got a no decision. Here's the thing, this guy can't beat the Angels. Do you know the last time Mr. Beckett beat the Angels? October 3, 2007. That's right almost 4 years. 6 starts, 6 losses, and 3 of those came right here in Anaheim. In his last 3 starts he is 0-1 with a 7.47 ERA giving up 19 hits in only 15.2 innings pitched. When he starts his team is giving him 4.7 runs of support while his opponents are sniffing 6 per game.
Joel Pineiro has been one of the hottest pitchers to back even though he did lose his last start. He is 8-1 last 9 games after winning 8 in a row and losing to the Yankees last week. Pineiro has not given up more than 3 runs in a game since June 6th that's how much he's keeping teams in check. I'm expecting Joel to give us that same effort today to avoid the sweep. The umpire in today's game is Todd Tichenor and the Angels should be ecstatic to see him. In 20 games umped this season the home team is an astonishing 17-3. His games average 9.5 runs per game and he only calls a strike 61.5% of the time. As I mentioned Todd seems to favor the home teams. Home team is 4-0 in Tichenors last 4 Wednesday games behind home plate, and the Home team is 4-0 in Tichenors last 4 games behind home plate vs. Boston. Look farther and you see that the Home squad is 20-7 in Tichenors last 27 games behind home plate (74% of the time).
As I looked more into the actual match up of these two teams, I found out the Red Sox do not fare well in this situation. First off, the Red Sox are 0-4 in their last 4 Wednesday games. I know most don't think this is a factor, but certain days of the week seem to affect some teams for whatever reason. Also, the Red Sox are 2-5 in Becketts last 7 road starts vs. a team with a winning record, and 4-9 in Becketts last 13 starts vs. a team with a winning record. As I looked onto the Angels side, I felt even better about this. Angels are 62-28 (68%) in their last 90 during game 3 of a series, and 35-17 (67%) in their last 52 games after losing the first 2 games of a series. Angels also perform well with Pineiro on the rubber in this situation as they are 5-0 in Pineiros last 5 starts during game 3 of a series. Angels are 8-0 in Pineiros last 8 home starts, and 6-0 in Pineiros last 6 starts following a team loss in their previous game. So there you have it folks. I'm saying that the Angels will indeed avoid the sweep. To be honest, I see 5 or 6 runs by these guys today, and that should be enough with Pineiro on the mound. I wish everyone good luck today, let's all have a profitable day
