San Diego @ Washington
Starting Pitchers:
San Diego: Garland (8-5, 3.24 ERA)
Washington: Martin (0-4, 3.38 ERA) The Nationals have lost all six of Martin's starts since he was called up from the minors May 29, and the right-hander hasn't won in nine starts.
Jon Garland starts for the Padres and should have no trouble shutting down Washington's anemic offense. J.D. Martin has no wins in six starts for the Nationals this season.Padres are 6-1 in their last 7 games as a road favorite. Padres are 5-1 in their last 6 road games vs. a team with a losing record....
Play#1:
ML over Washington
Houston Astros (33-51, 17-24 home) vs. Pittsburgh Pirates (30-53, 11-33 road)
Pitching Matchup:
Houston- Brian Moehler (1-4, 5.20 ERA)
Pittsburgh- Daniel McCutchen (1-3, 8.87 ERA)
Moehler has been pitching very well recently. In his last three starts, he’s 1-1with a 2.77 ERA.
Moehler hasn’t allowed more than three runs in any of those last three starts, and he’s allowed more than three runs only once in his last six starts.
Last night’s 6-2 loss to the Astros marked the sixth straight road game in which the Pirates failed to score more than two runs.
The Pirates have been held to three runs or less 32 times in 44 road games this season.
The Pirates have been held to three runs or less 53 times in 83 overall games this season.
The Astros are now 4-0 against the Pirates this season, and they’ve held Pittsburgh to three runs or less in each of those games.
The Pirates are 8-20 this season after losing by four or more runs in their previous game.
McCutchen pitched well last Thursday against the Phillies to earn only his second Major League win, but don’t look at it as a sign of things to come, considering it was at home against a team who’s struggling mightily right now to produce on a consistent basis.
Not that the Astros are the league’s hottest team right now or anything close to it, but even another solid showing by McCutchen might not be enough, considering how Moehler’s been pitching and how anemic the Pirates have been at the plate on the road.
