MLB Odds: Arizona Diamondbacks Host Betting Favorites Yankees

The top team in the majors take on one of this season's worst clubs when the New York Yankees travel to meet the Arizona Diamondbacks. ESPN will televise the carnage.

It was one of baseball's most exciting World Series matchups and played during a time an entire country needed some help picking up spirits. But while Sept. 11th will never be forgotten, the Fall Classic of 2001 seems a distant memory now, especially given the current state of affairs for the New York Yankees and Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Yankees are still in World Series form, coming off their championship last season and leading all of baseball with a 43-26 record. That mark is good enough to have netted backers of the heavily-juiced New York squad three units of profit.

Arizona has been back to the playoffs twice since its 2001 World Series title, getting swept out of the LDS in 2002 and broomed from the NLCS in 2007. However, the past couple of seasons have seen the D-Backs fall on hard times. The club's current 27-43 mark has Arizona in last place of the NL West, 13 games off the Pace of San Diego and down over 15 units at the betting window.

The baseball odds don't like the Diamondbacks' chances on Monday in their own park with oddsmakers establishing the Yankees as 160-170 favorites behind starting pitcher A.J. Burnett (8-6, 4.33). Arizona, who will send Rodrigo Lopez (5-9, 4.70) to the hill at Chase Field, is 145-150 underdogs with the early total at 10½ runs.

Burnett has gone down in defeat each of his last three outings, including a pair of road starts at Baltimore and Toronto. The right-hander has been charged with 16 runs, all earned, in 16 innings over that stretch.

New York is 2-3 in Burnett's five interleague assignments since joining the club before the start of the 2009 season. Two of the three losses to NL clubs have come against the Phils who he faced to in his most recent start on June 16 (3 1/3 innings, six ER).

He last faced Arizona in 2005, his final season with the Marlins. Burnett picked up the wins on two starts versus the D-Backs that year, allowing three earned runs in 15 innings of work that included one three-hit shutout.

Like Burnett, Lopez has taken the loss in his last three starts with the Diamondbacks on an 0-5 run with the right-hander on the mound. He got knocked around at Fenway last Wednesday, giving up all six Boston runs in a 6-2 defeat. It was his first and only interleague start of this campaign.

Lopez last faced the Yankees in late September 2006. The 34-year-old from Tlalnepantla, Mexico, only allowed two runs to New York in the game, but it was enough for him to be tagged with the loss, his 18th of that season.

This will be the fourth regular season series between the two franchises since meeting in the '01 Series. New York is 7-2 in those battles, going 2-1 here in Arizona during their 2004 encounter. The 'under' has a slight 5-4 advantage and is on a four-game streak.

The series continues Tuesday with Andy Pettitte (10-3, 2.47) scheduled to start for New York against Dan Haren (7-8, 4.71). The Diamondbacks will send recently acquired Dontrelle Willis (1-2, 4.20) to the mound for Wednesday's series finale against Javier Vazquez (5-7, 5.01).

NOTE: The W-L records shown for starting pitchers are their team's W-L mark when they started games in the 2010 season. Statistical sources for this article were Retrosheet.org, Baseball-Reference.com, ESPN.com and, of course, S-BEE-R-dot-com!

Passing on the game. If anything I would bet a little on Haren.
