The Umpire was out of position to have a clear view of the ball. Unfortunately his timing is impeccable. That would have been the 2nd Perfect Game in 1 weeks time.

This was absolutely sick, saw it live. I feel terrible for both Galarage and Joyce, all acounts have Joyce as one of the better umpires/people in baseball. Very unfortunate.

After being an umpire for so long, this is all he'll be remembered by.

In my heart, Armando Galarraga is the only major league pitcher to record a perfect game (21st perfect game) with 28 outs, nobody can top that. And if there's justice in this world, Bud Selig should reverse Jim Joyce's "safe" call on the 27th Indians batter and give the kid the perfect game he deserves...

Jim Joyce shouldn't even be checking/looking if Tigers 1st base Iggie Cabrera caught the ball or not, because the most crucial play will be on the 1st base bag anyways. If I was umping that game, with the potential perfect game looming in the horizon, the only time I will call it safe is if it was beyond reasonable doubt the batter beat the ball in my eyes/ears. Jim Joyce should be absolutely sure to call that bang-bang play safe, or he should have given Galarraga, who's gunning for history the benefit of the doubt if it was a coin flip...
