The Mariners are the play tonight, and very +EV in this spot. This low price reflects the fact that this offense has really stunk it up for the better part of the season. However, they face a pitcher they can hit tonight and the -112 is a big mistake as the Mariners should be a pretty big chalk in this game.
There isn't a whole lot that you can say in support of this Mariners offense. As everyone knows, it has had some serious struggles this year. Still this offense has made hay when facing the leagues lesser pitchers. While this is an offense that good pitchers sail through, it has put up some big numbers on pitchers with ERA'a of 6 +. I think tonight will be a good night for the Mariner Offense.
The Angels start Scott Kazmir. Kazmir did finish last season with a 1.73 ERA, but thatb was only in 6 starts as he finished with a 2-2 record and only pitched 36 innings. Every other season of his career, Kazmir has finished with close to a 4 ERA or higher.
This season Kazmir has struggled mightily. He comes in tonight with a 6.09 ERA with 8 starts for 44 innings pitched. So here is a guy who is only turning in a little over 5 1/2 innings per start. Kazmir has also given up more hits than innings pitched, nearly as many walks (23) as strikeout (33), and 7 home runs in 8 starts. And that is only averaging 5 1/2 innings per start. So I think this is a guy that even this Mariner offense can put some numbers up on.
The Mariners on the other hand start Cliff Lee. What even has to be said about Lee ? Everyone knows this guy is one of the best pitchers in the league year in and year out. While Lee is only 2-2 on the year he comes in with a 3.44 ERA and in his 5 starts has thrown for 37 innings pitched. So Lee is consistently getting deep into the game as he averages almost 7 1/2 innings per start.
Even though Lee has given up 37 hits in those 37 innings pitched, the damage is always limited because amazingly Lee has given up 1 walk and 0 Home Runs in 37 Innings this year. Wow, thats amazing.
So Kazmir --44 IP --- 23 walsk --- 7 HR
Then Lee --37 IP ----1 Walk -----0 HR
Yees, the Mariners offense is bad. There is no getting around that. But it is much better than what it has shown this year, and its only a matter of time before the Mariners break out and start scoring. Also, I am not sure this Angels offense is much better. You look at this Angels lineup and it just screams SHUT OUT for Lee tonight.
Aybar .242
Kendrick .257
Abreu .272
Hunter .278
Morales .286
Matsui .237
Naploi .265
Izturis .267
Ryan .188
I think Lee will seriously shut this offense down tonight, and the Mariners will be able to get at least 3 or 4 off Kazmir ( at Least ). To me, the Mariners at -112 is screaming +EV value tonight.
Good Luck.
