I was moderately successful last year in MLB, but starting fresh this year with a new approach. I'll be taking it easy for the first couple of weeks, as NBA is still my primary focus. Just having fun for now.

My favourite game on the board today is SFG @ HOU. Barry Zito is starting against Wandy Rodriguez. Both pitchers have struggled so far in the spring and both have a lot of pressure on them to perform this year. Zito is sandwiched between Matt Cain and Tim Lincecum to provide an offspeed lefty between the two hard throwing righties, and also to help justify his huge contract. IMO, Zito vs Rodriguez is a mismatch, and I feel like Zito gets knocked around early today.

The Giants are the better team, but I really don't see them sweeping the Astros to start the year and Zito is their weakest link in the series.

The other game I really like is BAL @ TB. Baltimore has appalling defense and are starting Kevin Millwood, who has no business being a #1 starter. His best days are behind him and survived as long as he did in Texas because offense was the priority down there. Last season with free-agency looming on the horizon for 2011 he put together his best season since 2005. Now with a new team in a tougher division, he's going to get slaughtered this season, starting today.

Finally, NYY @ BOS should be a good game. No one is really giving Burnett a chance today because last year the Sox absolutely owned him at Fenway in 3 starts (12.2IP, 22H, 20ER). But in 2007 & 2008, he was 3-0 at Fenway, pitching 3 gems. I'm inclined to go against him early in the season, and think this should hit early...

I grew up with bases. It was the first sport I ever laid a wager on, and used to know a lot about the players and teams. That being said, I haven't watched much in the last couple of years and my knowledge based is much diminished compared to what it was... It's all about evaluating pitchers. WHIP and IP are what matter for starters, and the strength of their bullpens.

Just keep your wagers small on baseball, especially early in the season. You can step it up in the heat of the summer once the pitchers have put together some consistency.

As for Minny, just a feeling. I don't have much respect for Pineiro.
