American League team with the best record gets to choose if they want to play in the eight day series (play Tuesday, off Wednesday, play Thursday, off Friday) or in the seven day series (start Wednesday with no day off between Game 1 and Game 2). This does not affect who they play. Best record plays the Wild Card, unless Wild Card in is same division (which IS the case with Bosox/Yanks), in which case best record plays 3-seed and 2-seed plays wild card. Next year, the best record in the National League will have the option.
