The guy should have a future ahead of him, but I think Houston is promoting him too soon, especially since they had other ways to manage their 40-man roster with this spot start. Houston had two openings on the 40-man before this move -- not counting catcher Hector Gimenez who is on the 60-day DL -- so Patton has to be added now. Would've made more sense to have added left-hander Philip Barzilla, a former Rice kid and a Houston-area native. Barzilla has been at Triple-A all season and done fairly well. If they don't add Barzilla to the 40-man by the end of the season, the Astros are going to lose him in the minor league draft. The word from the front office is Purpura had a run-in with the Barzilla kid a while back and isn't going to promote him at all now; in other words, Houston's GM is letting some personal spat get in the way of running the team properly.
