Managers in uniform - how did it all begin?

Why is it that baseball managers/coaches wear the team uniform (including baseball cap and cleats) when other N. American sports coaches wear either a suit (Basketball - Hockey) or a golf shirt (Football)?

I think it would be good for a laugh to see coaches wearing the uniform the players wear in the other sports.

Agreed! It would also be just as odd to see baseball managers out of uniform. Interesting observation that I had never given any thought to.

In the early days, and on into the 1950s, the manager was very often also a player. That's why they've always been in uniform.
