Tuesday's Front Page Plays (Jun 26)
    Bet D-Backs to dump Dodgers

    Game Time: 06/26/2007 09:40 PM -
    By: Al McMordie | bigal.com

After dropping last night's game 8-1 to Los Angeles, look for Arizona to bounce back strong this evening and even the series. Take the Diamondbacks to top the Dodgers in the desert tonight.

Our Tuesday MLB selection is on the Arizona Diamondbacks over the Los Angeles Dodgers, a series that is turning into quite a rivalry.

Last year when these two teams played 15 games, the series was tied at seven games apiece going into the final contest on September 24 which the Dodgers won. This year, although going into last night's game LA had taken four of five from the D-Backs, the run totals were exactly the same at sixteen runs apiece. Los Angeles has now won five of six after their 8-1 win on Monday.

Dodgers right-hander Chad Billingsley, a starter for most of last season, had been used exclusively as a reliever in 2007, but the recent season-ending injury to Jason Schmidt has necessitated a return to the rotation for the 22-year-old. The Diamondbacks will counter with their own version of a young right-hander who has pitched primarily as a reliever this season in 24-year-old Edgar Gonzalez. Gonzalez has punched his ticket back to the rotation in much the same way that Billingsley has -- as a fill-in for a veteran starter. In this case, it's Randy Johnson, who, unlike Schmidt, could be back in the rotation before the All-Star break, thereby making Gonzalez's stint as a starter potentially a short one.

But Gonzalez is a talented pitcher who has been a starter throughout his professional career, so there is little doubt that he will eventually secure a starting spot in the majors. He has every reason to make the most of opportunities like the one facing him this evening. Take Arizona.

    Free Pick: Diamondbacks -102

Lilly to bloom for Cubs at -140 over Rockies

    Game Time: 06/26/2007 08:05 PM -
    By: Marc Lawrence | playbook.com

Ted Lilly has done his best pitching at home this year, and he has had sharp control in his last three starts, so the Cubs are the play tonight.

The Chicago Cubs host the Colorado Rockies in Game 2 of this series tonight after a wild 10-9 win last night.

Ted Lilly takes the hill for the Cubs, and he is in fine current form with just two walks and 15 strikeouts in his last three starts. Furthermore, he has also issued only four walks against 18 strikeouts in his last three starts here at Wrigley Field.

Look for Lilly to improve to 6-1 in his last seven home starts in the month of June here tonight.

    Free Pick: Cubs -140

Red Sox, Mariners to stay Under 9 (-115)

      Game Time: 06/26/2007 10:05 PM -
      By: L.T. Profit Sports Group | who2beton.com

The Red Sox have been an Under machine on the road, and with Hernandez dominant vs. Boston and two great bullpens, go Under again.

Somewhat surprisingly, the Under is now 42-18-2 in the last 62 Boston Red Sox road games, and we look for that pattern to continue tonight.

The Red Sox are averaging a rather ordinary (for them) 4.48 runs per game on the road this season, with a pedestrian team batting average of .258. Thing do not figure to get any easier for them tonight against “King” Felix Hernandez and the Seattle Mariners. Hernandez pitched eight scoreless innings in his last start vs. the Pittsburgh Pirates in his last start, allowing just six hits with nine strikeouts, and he had a nice 3.52 ERA at home this season. More importantly, he had been virtually unhittable in two career starts vs. Boston, tossing a Complete Game one-hit shutout at Fenway Park earlier this year after limiting the Red Sox to two runs and four hits in seven innings here last season.

Now granted, Kason Gabbard is somewhat of an unknown commodity, but he has performed well whenever he has gotten the call for the Sox. Gabbard has made five Major League starts, and he allowed three runs or less in four of them. One of those outings came here in Seattle last season, where he allowed two earned runs in 5.1 innings.

Finally, these are two of the best bullpens in the game, as the Red Sox have the lowest bullpen ERA in the American League at 2.93 while the Mariners rank fourth in the AL at 3.58.

Free Pick: Red Sox, Mariners Under 9 (-115)

A’s -120 to make the grade over Indians

        Game Time: 06/26/2007 07:05 PM -
        By: Bob Harvey | bobharveysports.com

Dan Haren is a leading candidate for the Cy Young Award, so look for him to be the stopper tonight as he puts a halt to Oakland’s four-game skid.

The Oakland Athletics have lost four straight games, and tonight will look to their ace to stop the bleeding.

Danny Haren has been almost un-hittable this season, rolling to a 9-2 record with a microscopic ERA of 1.78. Haren won his last three starts, and he has now nine consecutive decisions. Furthermore, he has a fantastic 1.34 ERA and 0.83 WHIP in 47 innings in his seven road starts!

He will be opposed by Cliff Lee of the Cleveland Indians, who is 4-4 with a 5.46 ERA this season. Lee has won his last two decisions, but has not won three straight decisions in over a year. Besides, those last two victories both came vs. National League teams, and he has failed to record a Quality Start in his last four outings vs. the American League.

The Athletics are 8-3 the last 11 times they were favored, as well as 12-2 in as a team in Haren’s last 14 starts. Look for a dominant Haren to indeed be a stopper tonight in a low scoring game.

        Free Pick: Athletics -120

Play Pirates & Marlins Over 9½

          Game Time: 06/26/2007 09:40 PM -
By: Jimmy the Moose | sportspic.com

Though neither offense is particularly strong, tonight's starting pitchers seem to bring out the Over in everyone. Bet the Over this evening when the Marlins host the Pirates in Miami.

Both teams have struggled to score runs of late but it seems that when tonight's starters are on the mound, the Over follows.

The Over is 8-3 for the Pirates in Paul Maholm's last 11 starts. The Over is 5-1 in Maholm's last six road starts. His last start vs. the Marlins played over. The Over is 11-5 for the Marlins when Dontrelle Willis takes the mound. The Over is 13-4-2 in Florida's last 19 games as the favorite and 10-1 in their last 11 home games vs. a team with a losing record. Look for both team's to score often tonight. Play the Over.

          Free Pick: Pirates-Marlins Over 9½

            Indians +110 to scalp Haren & A’s

            Game Time: 06/26/2007 07:05 PM -
            By: L.T. Profit Sports Group | who2beton.com

A’s starter Haren has been great, but the Oakland offense has been non-existent lately and the bullpen has faltered, so look for an upset.

While we concede that Danny Haren of the Oakland Athletics has been the best pitcher in baseball this season, he may have to be perfect here to overcome Oakland’s offensive woes as of late.

The A’s have scored a grand total of five runs in their last four games, and they have particularly struggled with left-handed pitching lately, batting .233 as a team vs. southpaws over the last 10 games. Also, as great as Haren has been this year, he has always struggled with the Cleveland Indians, posting a whopping 6.45 ERA and 1.93 WHIP in four career starts against them.

The Athletics’ troubles with left-handers should make things easier for Indians starter Cliff Lee, who has actually turned things around as of late, posting a 3.50 ERA and 1.17 WHIP in his last three starts. Finally, these bullpens are also heading in opposite directions. The Cleveland pen has improved as the year has gone along, and that unit is now in the top half of the Major Leagues with a 3.89 ERA. Conversely, the Oakland bullpen has faltered due to some key injuries, especially closer Houton Street, and they have gone from the top 10 earlier in the year to the bottom 10 right now with a 4.23 pen ERA.

All things considered, we will call for the upset here as we look for the Tribe to snap Haren’s personal nine-game winning streak.

            Free Pick: Indians +110

I disagree with you Al McMordie. I actually like the Dodgers in that game. If they go plus money, I will be on them.
