    Mr. Monkey's NLCS Preview
OK, will try to do without bias towards the Phils. The rematch shows the Dodgers as a slight favorite over the defending champs. Surprising maybe to some, but probably not after briefly going over the matchups!

    Batters 1-8
Very close here except the Phils are alittle scarier in being able to put a 4-5 run inning on their opponents in a hurry! I give the Dodgers a slight edge in the outfield positions! Howard, Utley, and Rollins get the nod at their postions while Blake, Martin get it for LA at 3B and Catcher. Six of the Phils 1-8 batted over .300 in the NLDS. Ramirez broke out of a funk at the plate in the Dodgers game 3 clincher over the Cards. EVEN

    Starting Pitching
Even though 5 starters won't be used, Lee, Hamels, Happ, Blanton, and Martinez have the advantage over Kershaw, Wolf, Padilla, Kuroda, and Billingsley. Less questions must be answered with the Phillies starters. Phillies

    Bullpen
Without question LA possesses the superior relievers. Broxton, Sherrill, Kuo are set in stone and when the Dodgers are ahead by the 7th inning, odds weigh heavily on them winning. Philadelphia's has the talent in pen, just with Madsen and more so with Lidge the uncertainly exists when they enter the game. Dodgers

    Bench
The biggest flaw with the Phils is the bench and it's not going to change now! They did add Brunlett to the roster for the NLCS and will go with 11 pitchers. The Dodgers have a solid veteran bench with the likes of Pierre, Thome, Loretta, Ausmus, and Hudson. Torre will have at hand greater options to work with. Dodgers

    Managers
No doubt Torre has the resume which says Manual is not at his level. Listening to Maunal do an interview will only strengthen that opinion. But one thing Manual knows is his team! Dodgers

    Intangibles
In all my years of being a Philly fan, I have never seen a team so mentally tough as this group of players. Games 3 and 4 in the NCDS showed that. LA has the revenge factor and home field advantage, but maybe some added pressure as well? Game 1 is oh so important! Torre must be thinking that way? Switching to Kershaw from Wolf! Padilla in game 2 and Wolf in Philly? Because he knows the fans of the City of Brotherly Love would eat Padilla alive!Phillies

What I think the Phillies need to do to advance to the World Series! Of course they need quality starting pitching. But more importantly the batters need to be patient at the plate. IMO the Phillies can't be held in check when they focus on swinging at the right pitches. Point being, Kershaw resembles a young Sandy Koufax with his HIP ratio and his 1.97 ERA over his last 20 games, but he also averaged close to 5 BBs every 9 innings.

Jimmy Rollins getting on base would enhance the Phils chances greatly! By his standards this was a subpar year, but he hit .288 with 28 doubles, 4 triples, 15 HRs, 50 RBIs, 59 runs scored and 20 stolen bases after July 2. Take notice if he scores a run in any games, the Phillies are 61-19 (.763) when he does! If the Phils get good starting pitching, hit like they can, their lack of a bench and the Dodgers quality bullpen will not even come into play! Of course LA will need that bench! Again, these guys from Philly are MENTALLY HARD AS NAILS and the country boy in Charlie Manual seems to know the right buttons to push!

Any opinions and thoughts on the above (pro and con) is greatly appreciated. Continue to go with the Phils in the series and placing wager on them right now at +128 for game 1. Good luck to all and let's enjoy what shapes up to be a great final four!

      Game 1 Recap
Dodgers had a better hitting night but the Phils came up with the key ones! Lots of patience at the plate by the Phils led to 7 walks of which in reality 5 scored considering Hamels walked and was forced out by Rollins who later scored. Phillies now 62-19 when Rollins scores! One big spot by the Phils in the 5th turned it around quickly. Key moment when Park left Dodger runner stranded at 2nd base in the 7th with no outs to preserve 5-4 lead! Sherrill gives up first homer to left handed batter since June of 2008 that proves to be insurance runs the Phillies needed.

        Game 2 Martinez vs. Padilla

Both of these guys have the potential to be lit up like a Christmas tree or give you 7 quality innings? Both kinda projects right now and Pedro would seem like the choice to fade right now! The bettors seems to think so! Played every Phils playoff game so putting a small .5 unit at +139 on them.

Padilla has performed well with the Dodgers, especially against the Cards. But before he pitched against the Rockies the final weekend, his previous 6 games were against SD, SF, Arizona, and Wash. These teams ranked 29, 27, 24, 23 in runs scored for the season! Padilla is usually around the plate and hopefully the Phillies get some good cuts at it! And Pedro doesn't end up looking like the tree on the White House lawn! Good luck to all!

          Game 2 Recap
A gem of a game pitched by both Martinez and Padilla. The big advantage the Dodgers possess in the bullpen matchup helped decide game 2. Clear reason why the Dodgers were the favorites going in. The Phils didn't help themselves by sloppy infield play in the 8th, but using 5 relievers that inning without holding the score at 1-1 proved costly! Madsen, their most consistent reliever all year, has been anything but. J. Happ, might look like the goat of the game, but depending on a rookie who was a starter all year to record the biggest out of the game shows how Manual is trying to piece together the bullpen. Both teams probably feel good going back to Philly with the series tied at 1-1. The Phillies bats must come alive with 4-5 runs a game to win this series. Any more 2-1 games probably will go in LA's win column.

            Game 3 Preview
Series tied at 1-1! With the Phils sending Lee out to the mound tonight, the line right now making them -170 favs. says they should win and probably need it more than LA to turn the momentum back in their favor. Kuroda has limited the Phillies to a .095 average even though it is from only 2 games. If the Phils don't start scoring some runs early on, advantage the Dodgers if close from the 7th inning on! If game is played, wind predicted to be blowing straight in center field by game time.

              Game 3 Recap
The Phillies came out fast against Kuroda with a 4 run 1st! By the end of the 2nd they made it 6-0 and completely took any wind out of the Dodgers' sail from their game 2 comeback win! With Lee on the mound LA probably was thinking in the back of their mind, ok let's get game 4.

                Game 4 Preview
LA tries to even the series sending ex-Phils lefty Wolf against Blanton. Both pitchers are not hard throwers who need to have their other pitches working to be effective. Even though Wolf gets more fly outs, Blanton has given up more HR's. Patience at the plate by both teams once again will be crucial. The Phils getting off to the quick start again will not rattle Wolf as much as lower his confidence level! He has own Howard and Utley and Blanton hasn't fared as well against the Dodgers (Rameriz, Ethier, and Loney average all over .450!!!)

Blanton has gone over 7 innings over 3 times this year! The Phils bullpen is well rested but that won't make Manual any more confident about using them. Wolf might really need to go only 6 innings with the trusted pen Torre has available to him! Pitch counts are so important these days! Harping on this again, but patience at the plate is never so important as in the way baseball is played today! Like in last night's game, once the Phils got a big lead, they went back to swinging at too many bad pitches! IMO Rollins will need to be a bigger presence if the Phils have any intentions of repeating! After the line started at -130, taking the Phils as always right now at -117.

                  Game 4 Recap

What best describes tonight's outcome? Look under Intangibles when I wrote "in all my years of being a Philly fan, I have never seen a team so mentally tough as this group of players". The Philadelphia Phillies never get down on themselves! Also in the game 4 preview, I wrote "IMO Rollins will need to be a bigger presence if the Phils have any intentions of repeating". Now if only I knew which NFL teams would cover!

The Phils got out to an early 2-0 lead which could have deflated the Dodgers! But LA fought back hard with some clutch two out hits to take a 4-2 lead! They lead 4-3 into the 7th inning which with their bullpen appeared to be enough to secure victory! Kuo and Sherrill did their job! Broxton just needed just 4 outs to close it out but with some PATIENCE the Phils had 2 runners on without a hit! Then Rollins hit a gapper into rightcenter all the way to the wall which plated the 2 runners producing a 5-4 win! By the way, Rollins by scoring in the 1st, now has scored in 3 games, the wins! The Phillies record is now 64-19 when he scores!

Helluva' game last night, actually two solid games on Monday. This off day between Games 4 and 5 sucks, however; hard to know if it will interrupt the momentum Philly had after the Game 4 win and give Dodgers time to regroup, or will it cause the Dodgers to only brood for the entire day and come out even flatter on Wednesday?

WB, MrsMonkey had more faith in them than I did! As Rollins stepped to the plate, she looked at me and said 'isn't Jimmy clutch", I just looked at her with rolled eyes! You are right, usually a day off would help the losing team. But if the Dodgers leave their hotel and walk the streets of Philly, it won't be comforting. And staying in the hotel all day just makes you think more, of last night's game! Torre has a tough job ahead of him! Plus this on occasion brain freeze Phils team needs a day off to refocus after celebrating.

Game 5 in Philadelphia on Wednesday, Cobalt. Wonder if FOX will pay off the umps to keep the Dodgers in the series so they can spin the Torre angle ad nauseum?

Torre going against the grain again tonight! First he didn't want Padilla to start in Philly so he pitched game 2 and now Padilla is so lights out he will pitch in Philly. Odds favor Kershaw giving you a more predictable type of result. IMO Padilla is more of a gamble with either a gem again or possibly not lasting 3 innings? Numbers wise it is no secret the Phils hit better against righthanders.

No need to point out Hamels inconsistent numbers. Hamels this year seems to be a gamble every time he takes the mound. Manual maybe trying to pump him up, said he sees a great 2008 type game out of him soon! LA's projected 1-8 against Hamels are hitting .250 (25-100) with 4 HR's while Philly's respective group has an average of .294 (15-51) with 4 dingers against Padilla. No edge from those numbers. Padilla being more of a ground ball pitcher still gives up his share of homers!

The Dodgers must score first! If they get down by a couple runs, don't think their proficiency of coming back in the late innings during the regular season will occur. The Philly fans must come out strong and see if Padilla will fall apart? Of course I'm bias here, but still feeling Hamels is close to being his old self like Lidge has appeared to be somewhat of late and propelling the Phils to the World Series! Also counting on Padilla to resemble some of his starts as a Philly! Taking the Phils again at -140. Good luck to all!

                              Game 5 Recap
Phillies are NL Champs again! LA's 1-0 lead was erased quickly with a Werth 3 run homer in the 1st! After trading HR's in the 2nd the Phils added 2 more in the 4th for a 6-2 lead! Both Padilla and Hamels provided their teams with sub-par performances. The key moment of the game was in the 5th inning when the Dodgers were down 6-3. With one out and two runners on base, Phils' relievers get Either and Rameriz out to end the inning. This seemed to take the air out of LA's comeback balloon.

The Phils extend the lead to a comfortable margin and the 4+ innings of relief duty gets the job done without being tested. The final score 10-4! The Phils only had 8 hits tonight but 4 were homers. Game 4 they only had 5 hits and 5 runs.. The Phillies are the first NL team to repeat as champions since the 1995-96 Atlanta Braves. Rollins once again scored bringing the Phils record to 65-19 when he does this.

Amazing how it was the Dodgers' bullpen that most said would provide the winning difference in this series, yet it was the much-maligned Phillies bullpen that did the trick (well, and Cliff Lee ). Congrats to Philadelphia backers.
