Baseball Umpire Stats

I was just doing a little bases homework tonight, and came across last years umpire stats.

Laz Diaz stats are rather intriguing to me. If you bet the unders in the games he umped behind the plate last year, you would have won roughly 10 units.

How much do you base your capping around umpires?

It's sometimes a bit of an iffy proposition to weigh the umpire too much in the early part of the season. But once they all get 2-3 games behind the plate under their belt, I consider the umpire about as much as I consider the weather when trying to figure totals.

It always appeared to me that lots of bettors have used the home plate umpire as a huge influence on betting totals. Many moons ago I used to follow it......I think there is validity to it however I think it may be too heavily leaned upon by most.

I still feel the UMP stats are important for more than just totals wagering. There some ump's out there that just call certain pitchers completely different than others. I feel that a very key piece of info to have at your fingertips when your trying to find even a bigger edge when your considering a +230 dog.

Sure they are; never said otherwise. Just noted that when it comes to totals, both the umpires and the weather become fairly equal factors in my mind.

If Eric "Hey-Hey-Hey!" Gregg was still umpiring, I'd have to favor him in a game featuring a 'nibbling' pitcher like Glavine. Luciano used to call a high strike - - They all did 30, 40 years ago and more - - so you'd consider another umpire who might call 'em higher than normal when there was a flamethrower on the mound that could run those risers up there.

Bottom line, however, is the two pitchers and the teams behind them are the biggest factors. If you're betting the over just because the wind is blowing out at Wrigley, then I feel you're more likely to be disappointed than if you're betting it because of the pitchers and hitters in the game, plus the weather factors. Same if you're betting an under solely because the umpire behind the plate has a big strike zone, you're setting yourself up for a loss.
