Rick Renteria will not manage the White Sox in Monday night's game against the Cleveland Indians.
General manager Rick Hahn announced Monday afternoon that Renteria awoke Monday morning with a slight cough and nasal congestion. After consulting with team doctors, Renteria underwent precautionary testing at a Cleveland hospital. Out of an abundance of caution, he will remain at the team hotel and not manage until the team receives confirmation of the test result.
White Sox bench coach Joe McEwing, who will manage during Renteria's absence, reported before Monday's game that Renteria is feeling fine and that Renteria and the team were being cautious.
The news comes on a scary day for Major League Baseball, with 13 members of the Miami Marlins testing positive for COVID-19, forcing the postponement of two games scheduled for Monday night.
The White Sox announced a pair of players tested positive for COVID-19 upon arriving in Chicago for "Summer Camp" at the beginning of the month. One of those players was revealed to be third baseman Yoán Moncada, who missed the first two weeks of "Summer Camp" before returning a week before Opening Day. His teammates expressed no fear of being around him upon his return, showing faith in baseball's health-and-safety protocols, which require a players tests negative twice before rejoining his team.
