A whirlwind of a career it has been for Corby where in his first full season he makes the all star team but an injury the next year sets him back and his performance suffers to the point where he’s the 5th pitcher in the rotation for the Dbacks and struggling so bad that he was transitioned to a bullpen role and even a candidate for demotion. In the 2017 playoff series vs the Dodgers, Corby was the odd man out of Torey Luvollo’s selected 4 man rotation. He wasn’t used at all in their 5 playoff games. Fast forward to the next year opening day at Chase Field where I was happily in attendance drinking a Dos Equis, eating me a churro dog & studying the game program, I scratched my head at the decision to start Patrick Corbin. Zack Greinke & Robbie Ray were our best pitchers. What the hell Luvollo? This is gonna be one of the few games that’s a packed house. We want to win today man not see Pat get rocked around by the Rockies torrid lineup(my thoughts). Well, the Dbacks won that day. And Corbin didn’t pitch a gem but he was good. What’s more important is that day was deeper then just winning a baseball game. That decision ended up being what in my life I would consider the best managerial decision of all time. that day instilled the confidence in Patrick Corbin that led to a dominant season & eventually a long term, big money contract with the Nationals.
An absolutely empathetic & emotionally intelligent decision by Torey Luvollo. So with that being said, thank you Torey Luvollo.
