Wilmer Flores Fouls Ball Off Face
Wilmer Flores left Saturday night’s game against the Astros in the fourth inning after taking a foul tip off his nose.

Terry Collins said after the game that Flores has a broken nose. The Mets infielder was escorted off the field with head trainer Ray Ramirez holding a cloth to his face to help absorb the blood.

Flores swung on a 2-2 count on an inside pitch and fouled the ball square off of his face. He immediately went down and covered his nose, which was bleeding heavily.

The Mets have lost Michael Conforto and Yoenis Cespedes for the rest of the season and Flores, who hit a grand slam in the first game of this doubleheader, was one of the remaining legitimate major league bats still in the lineup.

“I feel a lot better than I thought. Very scary moment. Hopefully we’ll have to see what the doctor says and when I can go back out there and play,” said Flores, who suffered the freak mishap in the fourth inning of Saturday’s second game in a day-night doubleheader, the first sporting event held here after Hurricane Harvey devastated the region.

“It’s just like when I talk, laugh. But moving around, it doesn’t hurt,” Flores said.

“I can handle it,” said Flores, who was given antibiotics at the hospital. “I didn’t feel my nose. I thought I didn’t have a nose. I was just numb.”

“I never got hit in my face before. The last time I remember I was like 6 years old. But not in professional baseball,” Flores said. “The first thing I asked Ray was, ‘Is my nose OK?’ I didn’t feel it. What you feel is nothing good.

“He told me, ‘Everything is OK, OK, you’re just bleeding a lot.’ But it was scary,” Flores said.
