Play Snakes vs. Padres
Game Time: 9/28/2006 9:40:00 PM
By: Ben Burns
Look for the Padres' precarious lead atop the NL West over the Dodgers to remain shaky after the D-Backs dispatch San Diego tonight in Arizona.
The Padres are battling for a playoff spot while the Diamondbacks are playing out the string. This has caused the line on San Diego to become inflated, creating solid value with the home underdog.
Both teams had to travel yesterday but the Diamondbacks had the advantage of playing during the afternoon while the Padres played during the evening. San Diego starter Jake Peavy comes off a great outing. However, that was at Petco Park and it came vs. the lowly Pirates. Tonight represents a much tougher test as he has always struggled against the Diamondbacks. In fact, Peavy is 0-2 with a 7.15 ERA and in two starts against Arizona this season and 6-8 with a 5.65 ERA for his career. He's also just 4-7 with a 4.69 ERA on the road this season.
On the other hand, Snakes starting hurler Miguel Batista has always fared well against the Padres, recording a 1.29 this season and a 3.28 ERA in 10 career appearances against them. For the season, the Diamondbacks are a highly profitable 19-13 (+9 net games) when Batista starts while the Padres are a money-burning 14-17 (-9.9 net games) when Peavy takes the mound.
Its also worth mentioning that the Diamondbacks are a healthy 13-7 the last 20 times they hosted the Padres and 7-3 this season when playing at home with a total of either 8-8½. Don't be surprised to see them thrive in the spoiler role this evening.
