#19Yeah, Brian Sabean for acquiring fossil after fossil every off-season and during the trade deadlines. They'll probably be fielding a team of senior citizens within the next decade knowing that trend.Comment -

#20Originally posted by OWNEDPirates are too hot for me to fade them and I've never see this Youman character pitch. 5 in a row and 7 of 8 I believe for them.
Youman doesn't bring much to the table, but crafty lefty rookies often do have some good starts in the very beginning of their big league stints when people haven't paid close enough attention (see John Rheinecker).
I would say the best way to go would be to ride the Dodgers' home totals streakiness, which they have exhibited all year long. They are currently going over, at 7-2 to the over at home in September (and 49-27(!) for the year).
Pittsburgh is also 8-3 to the over on the road in September, so with Youman going, and Billingsley with question marks, that might be the way to play this one.Comment -

#21Originally posted by ganchrowBillingsley is showing some streaky tendencies, remember he struggled every start when he first came up before he began to excel. This might be like Gustavo Chacin earlier in the year, who had an ugly one-inning start returning from the DL before regaining his effective form in his next start.

Got plenty of action on the diamond right at this moment, so no need to add a play on the late game without proper capping.Comment -

#22Originally posted by OWNEDLast year, I remember a lot of pitchers were getting shelled harder in their 2nd starts off the DL than their first one, fwiw.
Returns from the DL for starting pitchers are actually a very highly volatile situation, one of the highest in baseball. I bet if you went back and checked, more often than not they had an unusually or surprisingly good start on their return, and then had a strongly opposite outing the next time. The same does tend to happen in reverse as well.Comment -

#25Originally posted by OWNEDNever knew that, so you would expect a somewhat decent outing from the kid tonight?
sort of, it means that there is a lower correlation between the first two starts back from the DL than between most other consecutive starts. still, a good start is a good sign and a bad start is a bad sign. i'll write in more detail about pitchers and injuries and the DL later if you want.Comment -
