I know Ortiz is probably is the popular pick here, although I feel Morneau will win it after all the votes are counted. The Red Sox fall from grace from the playoff run will cost him alot of votes from those east coast voters.

Carlos Beltran 5/1

Field 20/1

It sure does look like a two man race right now between Howard and Pujols. Even with the time he spent on the DL, and at 5/4 I feel Pujols will win this award.




Will Johan Santana Win The AL Cy Young Award?

I'm going to go with "NO" on this one myself. Even though Santana has 17 wins and all, there are alot of other good canidates in the running for this award. Who's to say Santana will not get hurt, or have a few very bad outting against Detroit and the White sox in the next few weeks.

Talk about an open field here IMO... Nobody has really stepped it up this year at all. After it's all said and done I have to go with the chalk on this one, because the Cardinals will be the only division winner of all the choices. As we all know the voters look very strongly at that type of stuff.

The Twins Justin Morneau and White Sox Jermaine Dye have been huge contributors to their respective teams’ playoff runs, but remain underdogs to walk away with the hardware at 13/2 and 15/2, respectively. PinnacleSports lists 2004 AL Most Valuable Player Vladimir Guerrero as a 12/1 long shot to capture the honor for a second time.



In the National League, the online sportsbook lists Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols as a 5/4 favorite to win his second consecutive MVP award. Following his recent power surge, Philadelphia’s Ryan Howard has taken over the Major League lead in HRs and RBIs, but remains a slight MVP underdog at 7/5. Mets center fielder Carlos Beltran has silenced any detractors this season by turning into a solid MVP contender with odds of 5/1.



PinnacleSports.com has also handicapped the Cy Young race and currently favors St. Louis’ Chris Carpenter to repeat in the National League at 2/1 followed closely by the Cubs’ Carlos Zambrano at 3/1. Arizona’s young ace Brandon Webb has been installed at 9/2 while Braves’ veteran John Smoltz and Marlins’ rookie Josh Johnson stand at 17/2 to be named the league’s best pitcher. Meanwhile, San Diego closer Trevor Hoffman is a 23/1 long shot to become the latest relief pitcher to capture the award normally reserved for starters. The American League Cy Young race paints a much clearer picture as Minnesota’s Johan Santana has distanced himself from all other candidates by becoming the Major League leader in the three pitching “triple crown” categories. Now leading the big leagues in wins, strikeouts and ERA, Santana is listed as an overwhelming 1/5 favorite to win his second Cy Young.

i just can't give it to Papi if they don't make either win the wild card, or a serious surge at the wild card.

I was on Big Papi's side last year, despite him only being a full-time pinch-hitter. But not this year. Jeter and Morneau would be my top two choices in the AL right now, and Morneau's doing more with a lot less around him than Jeter.

And as clutch as Oritz has been, I'm not even convinced he's the Red Sox' MVP much less the AL MVP. The player who kept them at the top of the AL East during the first half, in my opinion, was Papelbon. Take away the job he did closing games and Boston's well out of any postseason consideration.

I'd probably give Howard a slight edge over Pujols right now, at least in my book.

I agree that Santana is a lock in the AL Cy Young race. And with nobody really blowing away the NL field, Carpenter is the favorite since he's coming off the '05 award. I'd vote Webb second over Dumbrano, er, Zambrano right now.

Come on Willie Bee, I could buy Manny being the Red Sox MVP instead of Papi but Papelbon... I dont know man...

You just said in another thread that Howard strikes out 26% of the time...
Pujols average is much better and he's a much better defensive first baseman... and he would be up there with Howard in HR's and RBI's if he hadnt been on the DL...

I'm trying to make another point in that other thread, that striking out 25% of the time and blowing saves 25% of the time can have the same effects.

When it comes to MVP, I take the middle 'V' very seriously and don't just look at who has the best stats. There's no doubt in my mind that both Howard and Pujols have been extremely valuable to their respective teams. I just think Howard has had less around him in that lineup most of the season than Pujols. And the Cardinals have won a lot of games the Phillies didn't due to St. Louis having a much stronger pitching staff than Philadelphia.

As for Papelbon, who else on that roster could've converted saves like he did in the first half?
