Pedro Martinez finally goes on the DL
Pedro Martinez will be placed on the 15-day disabled list because of his right calf problem.

With the Mets situation now, there was no real reason not to place him on the DL. Now he can rest up and make sure he's ready for the playoffs. This is probably the only benefit of having a 10+ game lead in the division.

I agree, and they need him bigtime in October.
The guy alone represents the only chance the Mets have of winning it all.

He pitched through the injury his last few starts and it finally caught up with him.

          The kid can pitch...
He might be the Mets best pitcher, the one they were so desperately shopping for

Randolph should be concerned the Mets pitching staff in general...
I think the Dodgers have a better pitching staff than they do...

i think both the dodgers and mets pens are equal really. the only difference is that the dodgers pen is clicking on all cylinders right now is all.

I would take the Dodgers staff over the Mets' for a playoff series any day of the week bbd...
Maybe even the Cards depending if and how Mulder comes back...

Mulder pitches his 3rd rehad start tonight. I'm curious to see how he does, because that could make or break the cardinals season on how he progesses.

Bulldog, can I get you some blue and orange Haterade??

We've been thru the Cards thing, let's analyze the Dodgers.

                      1. Penny vs Pedro Although Penny's been good this year, his durability has always been a question, but this is still a great matchup. We'll give it to Pedro based on experience.

                      2. Glavine vs Maddux Gosh, you must be in your old Brave glory, eh? Lately, Maddux has been money, and Glavine seems to have gotten back on track as well. This is another close call that would probably be decided by the bullpen, but we'll give this to the Dodgers....like the first matchup, it could go either way, depending on which Maddux shows up.

                      3. Lowe vs Maine (yep, I said it, John Maine is your game 3 starter) Lowe has been terribly inconsistent this year, and Maine just the opposite. This is a much easier call than the first 2, Mets have the edge.

                      4. Billingsly vs. Trachsel or El Duque Billingsly is another guy who has turned it on lately, but he is a rookie, how's he gonna handle the postseason? Conversely, both Trax and Duque are vets who've been around the block with lots of experience (esp. El Duque in the playoffs) I think you have to give the Mets the edge here because you really don't know what Billingsley is gonna give you in a big pressure game.

What scares me about the Dodgers isn't their pitching, but their offense. In any event, as a Mets fan, they are the only team in the NL that I do not want to see in OCtober, but it has all the makings of a fantastic series, much like the Mets/Braves in '99. I still hate Kenny Rogers.....

I just knew you would bite Jesterson, just knew it.
I personally think that the Mets can matchup better with the Dodgers offense and not so much with their pitching staff.

Your analisis is good, but you skipped a few details. Mark Hendrickson for example would probably start game 2 of that series unless Maddux keeps up doing what he has lately in which case Dodgers have a huge edge...

I like the chances of Hendrickson winning his start...

Billinglsy has been good of late, but I think he'll end up in the bullpen along with Aaron Sele... two pretty good (would be) long relievers imo...

Plus your analisis is counting on a 100% healthy Pedro which hasnt been the case for great part of the season...
Mets are a .500 team when Glavine and Pedro dont start, and thats counting Glavine's good months...

I dont hate the Mets, of course I dont like them either... but at this point I wouldnt put any money on them to win the NL pennant.Too many ???? in that starting rotation, bullpen didnt improve with the Nady trade, outfield issues, Wagner??
                        Where does it end...
Good thing is they will probably get the Wild Card while the Cards and Dodgers kill one another... but....

It would certainly be a nice series to watch if the Mets and Dodgers met in the NLCS, cant wait to see what the line is!!!

                          How'd ya guess I'd bite??

Honestly, I'd LOVE if Hendrickson started game 2! Although it'd make for a tough day for Delgado in all likelihood, I'll take his inexperience any day over Maddux.

As far as Pedro goes, if he had a headache he'd have gone on the DL with the lead they have right now. He's gonna come back, get his 4 or 5 tune up starts for the playoffs and be as fresh as anyone could hope come October. Not to mention that Penny's ERA has gone up 3/4 of a run since the beginning of July...if he's not effective in October, the Dodgers are in a whole lot of trouble.

And what team doesn't have a few ??? these days? As far as the outfield goes, Floyd should be back sometime in Sept. and you'll see Chavez play against lefties, giving the Mets even more speed on the bases...RF will probably be Tucker (career wise numbers what Nady was expected to be) or Milledge if he can come around. Not a huge deal considering the 1-6 guys they have already.

And Easy on Wagner!! Dude's got a 2.5ish ERA, and 11+ K/9...yet everyone talks like Looper's still in NY. You are right about the bullpen though, since Sanchez got hurt it's definitely not as strong, but Heilman's been doing a good job in the 8th, and they can get to him pretty well with situationals.

The bottom line is the Mets are undoubtedly THE team to beat in the NL and are a favorite against anybody, Dodgers included. LA's starters are their biggest ? especially with Penny fading a bit down the stretch. I guarantee you he'd be resting if they were up 14 games. Anyhow, I'm of the thought that LA's pitching is suspect enough to offset their offensive capabilites, and NY would win in 6 (4 in a short series). Still though, the Dodgers are the one teamm I'd like to avoid in the playoffs, they've just got so much offensive firepower.
