SugarHouse Sportsbook Review

Pros

  • Large offering of alternative lines and props.

Cons

  • Will limit bettors on a heater.
  • Deceptive promotions.
  • Casino-first focus for their platform.
  • Shares the same horrible newsfeed that BetRivers features.
  • Identical in every way to subpar-sister-site BetRivers thanks to Rush Street Gaming parent company.

Bonuses

$250 Deposit Match

SugarHouse will match your first deposit up to $250 if you use the promo code 250MATCH when signing up. The bonus money has a 1x playthrough requirement within 30 days at odds of -200 or longer before you can withdraw funds.

Terms and conditions apply.

You usually see either a risk-free bet or a deposit match as a welcome bonus at most sportsbooks. SugarHouse goes with a deposit match up to $250, which is nice as it gives you free money to play with instead of risk-free bets that only award you if your first bet is graded a loser.

Unfortunately, $250 is very low compared to the industry standard. In comparison, DraftKings matches your first deposit at 20% up to $1,000. For risk-free bets, PointsBet offers a value of $2,000.

Like BetRivers, the deposit match at SugarHouse isn’t automatically given to you either. You have to opt in to activate it. To do that, go to the Cashier / Deposit menu and make your first deposit. Enter the code 250MATCH within the promo field. Your bonus funds will be applied to your account within 48 hours. You’ll receive an email once the funds are ready to be activated.

Bonus Terms Worth Knowing
All SugarHouse bonuses have a 1X wagering requirement. So, if you deposit $250 and they match with $250 in bonus money, once $250 in wagers are completed (in whatever wager amounts you’d like), the $250 in bonus will be converted to your cash balance.

To count towards play-through requirements, bonus money wagers must be on games or events with odds longer than -200. For example, bets on a game or event with odds of -300 will not be counted towards play-through requirements, but wagers on a game or event with odds -190 will be counted. Any + odds will be counted towards play-through requirements.

The bonus money has no cash value and cannot be transferred, exchanged, or withdrawn. When they offer you bonus money, you can “activate” it to begin fulfilling its cash conversion requirements, or you can “bank” it in your account (your “Bonus Bank”) to activate it at a later date.

Bonus Money banked in your Bonus Bank can be activated at any time before its expiration, regardless of the order in which you originally banked it. Please note, however, that you must always activate all Bonus Money from a particular Bonus Money Promotion at once and that you may activate the Bonus Money from only one Bonus Money Promotion at a time.

You may not activate Bonus Money from an additional Bonus Money Promotion until you have met the play-through and other requirements for your already-activated Bonus Money (or the activated Bonus Money has expired). Bonus Money will expire 30 days after issuance, whether or not you have already activated it to begin fulfilling its cash conversion requirements.

Ongoing Bonuses and Promotions
SugarHouse has a wide variety of ongoing promotions, such as standard odds and profit boosts. Unfortunately, the maximum bets are usually limited to $25 wagers with top winning ceilings of $250, and bets can only be placed on any offering with odds of -200 or longer (i.e., -100, +150).

They offer larger boosts if you’re live betting in-person at a sporting event such as a Pittsburgh Penguins game. These would be cool concepts if they were more widely offered with looser limits. However, if you’re evenly a reasonably profitable regular bettor, you’ll find yourself excluded from participating in ongoing promos.

Fake Milly-Maker
SugarHouse offers more significant promotional events, such as their $1,000,000 Beat the Spread Challenge for NFL, but even that contest isn’t as sweet as it seems.

For this fake milly-maker, you place $25 or more real money, single wagers on any NFL pregame (full game) spread(s) with odds of -125 or longer each week during the NFL season.

When your spread wins, you will be awarded (1) point towards the leaderboard total. You can place a qualifying bet on the weekly Game of the Week to be awarded (3) points for a winning spread.

Each week on Tuesdays, the Top 200 point earners on the leaderboard will be awarded a Bonus Money prize, up to a top prize of $5,000 each week. After the promotion, the Top 1,000 point earners on the leaderboard will be awarded a Bonus Money Prize, up to a top prize of $50,000.

More Contest Terms to Know
Remember that Bonus Money is non-withdrawable until the 1X play-through requirement is fulfilled. So, even if you win first place in this competition, you aren’t just handed a $50,000 cash jackpot as most players assume. It’s also crucial to know not to try and cash out those winnings immediately. Cash out of Free Bets constitutes the bet void, and no winnings will be issued to the participant.

In addition, all Bonus Money needs to be wagered within 30 days after being credited. Otherwise, it will expire. All Bonus Money can be wagered on sports at -200 or longer only and casino games (excluding live dealer table games).

Summary

SugarHouse Company History
The first brick-and-mortar SugarHouse Casino opened in September 2010 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was initially awarded a license to operate in 2006 but faced many challenges with city officials before finally breaking ground.

SugarHouse is now owned by gaming operator Rush Street Interactive (RSI). The Chicago-based company launched its first casino site, PlaySugarHouse.com, in New Jersey in September 2016. It added an integrated sportsbook in August 2018.

In May 2019, SugarHouse Casino became the first casino in Pennsylvania to offer online sports betting. RSI announced that the casino would be rebranded as Rivers Casino Philadelphia later in 2019.

RSI was the fourth-largest U.S. operator across online casinos and sports betting as of July 2021. RSI is also active internationally, offering its online casino and sportsbook in the regulated gaming market of Colombia on RushBet.co. RSI owns sportsbooks and casinos all over the country. Rush Street also owns BetRivers Sportsbook and Casino, a sister company to SugarHouse.

In What States is SugarHouse Available?
SugarHouse is RSI’s offering in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. It is also the official sportsbook of the Connecticut Lottery. Connecticut players will be able to place bets in person at one of 15 accessible SugarHouse retail sportsbooks across the state, including 10 Sportech Venues locations. The first numbers released from Connecticut showed that SugarHouse is struggling to keep up with the handle of industry leaders. FanDuel reported more than $27 million in total handle for October 2021 compared to approximately $23.8 million for DraftKings and $3.25 million for SugarHouse.

You can find BetRivers in Arizona, Colorado, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Iowa, Michigan, Virginia, Louisiana, West Virginia, and Illinois. Rush Street was also one of the nine operators selected by the State of New York permitted to offer mobile sports wagering in the state.

Sports Covered at SugarHouse
You’ll find a full complement of sports to bet on at SugarHouse, including Aussie Rules, Badminton, Baseball, Basketball, Boxing, Chess, Cricket, Cycling, Cyclo-cross, Darts, Football, Futsal, Golf, Handball, Hockey, Motorsports, Rugby League, Rugby Union, Snooker, Soccer, Table Tennis, UFC/MMA, Volleyball, Olympics, and Winter Sports.

Online and Mobile Sports Betting Experience
Like the BetRivers product, SugarHouse has different apps depending on your state. And also, like BetRivers, users are giving SugarHouse an average rating at best. The ratings vary depending on which state you’re in, but Apple users have given SugarHouse lower ratings than Android users on Google Play. You see consistent mentions of the app freezing and crashing on both mobile platforms and regular complaints from casino users losing money on high-risk games like slots.

SugarHouse is virtually identical to BetRivers regarding their online sportsbook, and that’s not a good thing. The platform feels cluttered and outdated, with a lot of real estate taken up by their pointless newsfeed scrolling on the side.

Live Betting at SugarHouse
SugarHouse offers live betting and live streaming on certain sports with an active bet placed. Their live betting sections are surprisingly well organized and easy to navigate. This is an area some sportsbooks have a problem managing well. The downside to live betting at SugarHouse is that their odds are sourced from Kambi, meaning you won’t be offered many opportunities to exploit mispriced lines or find unique odds in-game.

Other Gaming Options at SugarHouse
If you’re a casino-first customer just looking for a sportsbook on the side, then SugarHouse is probably a good option for you. The Rivers and SugarHouse casino brands are well-known and widespread throughout the country. They offer more than 500 slots and over 300 different casino games, including live dealer table games at your disposal.

In October 2021, RSI released “RushArena,” a proprietary and innovative multi-player tournament engine to allow players to compete in head-to-head slots tournaments. The technology developed to create RushArena will be employed to create peer-to-peer competition events, allowing BetRivers, PlaySugarHouse, and RushBet players to challenge each other in interactive and rewarding sports betting battles.

iRush Rewards Program
RSI partners all offer the iRush Rewards Program, a pretty standard, unattractive sportsbook/casino loyalty program.

For every real-money wager you place will earn you two types of reward points: Loyalty Level Points and Bonus Store Points. As you bet, you collect points. You earn a single point for $10 wagered on single bets, going up to 1 point per $1 for unconventional or multi-team parlay bets.

Loyalty Level Points build your status in a tiered rewards program offering perks as you level up your loyalty status. Elite status entitles you to rewards such as a free Apple or Android playing device, VIP concierge at Rivers casino properties, and other “ultra-luxury VIP gifts.”

Like most sportsbook and casino rewards programs, you have to spend a lot of money to get anything out of this. With SugarHouse operating like every other major sportsbook and limiting players left and right when they get on a roll, the top-end rewards here are virtually impossible to achieve. In addition, to maintain your current Loyalty Level, you need to keep wagering at the same pace you were in the past, or else they start deducting points you earned daily.

SugarHouse Reputation
Like BetRivers, unless you live near a physical SugarHouse casino/sportsbook to potentially take advantage of some rewards programs, there is no reason to use it as your primary sportsbook. Everything they offer is mediocre and better features can be found in all of their top competitors. Rush Street produces various innovative products that focus more on the iGaming side of the gambling world. This book is a pass until they push more of that focus onto improving their sportsbook, including the quality of their odds, promos, and overall user interface.
