Team USA gymnastics superstar Gabby Douglas says she never meant any disrespect by not placing her hand over her heart during the national anthem Tuesday ... saying, "I apologize if I offended anyone."
Douglas took some heat following the team's gold medal victory in the All-Around competition -- when she stood next to teammates Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, Laurie Hernandez and Madison Kocian ... but didn't put her hand over her heart.
It didn't take long for Gabby to head to Twitter to explain herself ...
"In response to a few tweets I saw tonight, I always stand at attention out of respect for our country whenever the national anthem is played," Douglas wrote.
"I never meant any disrespect and apologize if I offended anyone. I'm so overwhelmed at what our team accomplished today and overjoyed that we were able to bring home another gold for our country."

And since when is placing your hand over heart (which I've always found really weird anyway) mandatory? As long as your standing at attention and facing the flag, what's the problem?

Its not mandatory. It's simple respect. And why have you always found it "really weird"? The only thing I find classy about this is the 4 other teammates showing the proper respect.

Most people in the US do not know you're supposed to put your hand on your heart for the anthem. Most think you only do it for the Pledge of Allegiance. Protocol is to do it for both BUT over the years it's been said, improperly at times to do it only during the pledge of Allegiance. It's best to just let people know if they don't and not ridicule them. Even Obama had his hands down during the anthem when he first took office. He was told by his grandfather to only do it during the pledge of allegiance. Common mistake, not enough to get your panties in a bunch.
